And his talents do not stop there.

According to an article in French newspaper L’Equipe from March last year, Bouaddi averaged 18.5 out of 20 across all subjects at school, which is practically unheard of in the French education system.

When he was 15, he won an eloquence competition for young French footballers (yes, such a competition does actually exist) staged at the Elysee Palace in Paris, after delivering a speech entitled ‘Is the result more important than the method?’ in front of the nation’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron.

A dedicated and gifted student, Bouaddi obtained a scientific baccalaureat (with an impressive “Very good” mention) one year ahead of schedule in June 2024 and is currently studying towards a mathematics degree with the University of Marseille.

All while holding down a place in central midfield for a Lille side who recently secured automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League by finishing third in Ligue 1.

“His parents made sure that the whole family received an exceptional education. One of his sisters has a PhD in pharmacy, for example. The family are really big on the importance of work and studying hard to succeed in life.”

After joining Creil as a five-year-old, Bouaddi was swiftly moved up an age level. Although he was born in 2007, the boy with the hairband commonly found himself in games with players born a year or two earlier.

“From a very young age, he was one of the best players in his age category,” says Layadi. “There was already a maturity to his football, his reading of the game and his communication with others on the pitch.

“What stood out was his game intelligence. His movement, his passing — everything that you need from a midfield player was there. And he was a real leader. That was already part of his game.”

At Creil, his coaches were amazed by his off-pitch discipline. While still to reach his teens, and long before the spotlight of the professional game had started to swing towards him, he was already going out of his way to eat a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep.

“He was passionate about performance,” says Layadi. “For him, it was all about being a real athlete. His individual work, his background work, his approach at home in terms of food and sleep — he worked on everything.”

There again, Bouaddi’s approach set him apart from his peers.

“He didn’t eat burgers, pizza and things like that,” says Khair. “When we went to tournaments, if things had gone well, we’d go and eat at a fast-food place after. But he didn’t eat that. He only ate healthy stuff. He didn’t play video games either. He never had a PlayStation or a Nintendo DS. He was never on social media or on his phone. He would read lots of books, though.”

Bingo. There's a reason so many Big Guys just cannot replicate what Haaland can do. It's not about the size or power, it's all about game intelligence.

“There were other strikers we thought were more promising at the age of 14 but a few years later he’s the best striker in the world,” says Grottland. “That says a lot about talent and how it develops.

Today, the Israeli soldier we met in the post-October 7 yoga video is part of an organization called Brothers in Yoga (there’s a Sisters in Yoga, too) to help soldiers on their “path towards healing” after “going through” fighting in Gaza. When they return and turn to yoga, it is “amazing beyond words . . . when someone who is dealing with PTSD and is a model for participants.” Through this, “they see the growth, they see the opportunity to heal very, very deeply, and to help others” modeled; they find the permission to do the same. Similarly, healing from moral injury requires “work on acceptance and making peace with the deed that caused the crisis. In other words, the person needs to learn to forgive himself.” In other words, a person must learn to disregard the consequences of their actions, disregard the people they harm. Good news, Israelis are well-equipped, their entire sense of self premised on a twinned supremacy and erasure.

A person who acts in violation of their moral world has the good fortune of keeping that world intact; it remains a place they return to. For many Israelis, Gaza breached the border. Psychic threats are no match for the world’s most moral army; through yoga, therapy, surfing, self-affirmation (saying “we’re the most moral army” over and over), the threat can be eliminated, and the integrity of the self reconstituted. It starts by acknowledging the breach. Delicately, without losing sight of one’s why, oneself, one’s people: You feel like a bad person because you’re actually a good person who did bad things and the fact that you feel bad about it is an indication of your goodness. Doing the bad things actually helps you realize you’re a good person. The people you killed? They started you along your healing journey.

We used to play Monopoly. Do you know this game? It was dangerous to go outside, because snipers had surrounded the city, so me and my cousins would sit on the floor by the balcony and play for hours. We would hear the sirens and the bombs. Sometimes the ground would shake, and the Monopoly pieces would end up all over the floor.

But whenever we played, there would be these little moments when we got lost in the game. For a couple of minutes, we would forget about the war.

We’d forget that the world was falling down around us.

For just a moment, we were allowed to simply be kids.

We really wanted to play football outside. Every day we saw innocent people get carried into ambulances. But how do you lock a child inside for four years? You cannot, and our parents knew it. Every once in a while, when it seemed quiet, my mother would open the front door, and I would go out to play with the other kids from the neighbourhood.

I’ll never forget the look she would have when she opened that door. She had this faint smile, because she was so happy to see me play. And then I looked at her eyes, and I could see how worried she was that I would never come back.

Iran will treat all of Elon Musk’s companies in the Middle East, including SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, as military targets as it retaliates against the U.S., Iranian state media outlet Fars reported Thursday.

Iran is targeting “all interests related to economic holdings managed by Elon Musk in West Asia,” including a regional Starlink ground station, according to a translated post on Fars’ Telegram page.

Starlink has played a key role in U.S. military operations against Iran, supporting high-tech ordnance ranging from aerial attack drones to unmanned surveillance and strike vessels.

Iran asserts the U.S. has committed war crimes against it with the support of Musk-related companies, Fars reported, citing an “informed source.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to attack all facilities related to [Musk]-managed holdings in the region and occupied territories,” that source said.
