Rohingya Refugee News (RRN)

Independent reporting on Rohingya displacement, camps, and power structures. Published by Shafiur Rahman. Newsletter:
“Rohingya nest…swept by Immigration.” That is how a Malaysian Facebook account describes a raid on Rohingya families in Ampang—as though human beings were vermin to be cleared away. Crude, dehumanising language. More than 55,000 people liked it.
MORNING LAUGH: Min Aung Hlaing and The Rat King, aka Vladimir Putin. Min Aung Hlaing’s grovelling for weapons reached mystical heights when he told Putin that the Buddha had foretold the rise of a Russian “rat king” - meaning Putin! See screenshot from Wiki.
No one wants a junta stooge in Myanmar’s UN seat. But as Kyaw Moe Tun’s mandate comes up for renewal in Sept, should he get a free pass? He still owes answers on Rohingya citizenship (remember Brad Sherman’s interview) and the NUG’s soft-pedalling on accountability for Suu Kyi & the Arakan Army.
ROHINGYA FAMILIES DRIVEN OUT OF TOWN Around 30 Rohingya families were reportedly driven out of Kuala Muda, Penang, Malaysia, last night by vigilante groups. Persecuted refugees are now facing mob expulsions in the country where they sought safety. vide: www.facebook.com/groups/33000...
Before Rohingya boats, there were Vietnamese boats. In June 1979, Malaysia’s then Deputy PM Mahathir was reported as backing a “shoot on sight” policy against refugee boats. Tomorrow in an OpEd, I look at how that older language of pushback & lethal force has returned.
Rohingya Camp 05 Landslide 5 Children dead. Many children still trapped. Another natural disaster? These deaths happened in a place where 1m people have been confined for years in overcrowded camps, unstable hillsides, with limited freedom to move, work or choose where they live. Containment kills.
The Empty Hospitals of UNHCR UNHCR spent $140k on solar equipment for this 20-bed facility on Bhasan Char + fitted it with a $74k Xray machine. Then, they left it empty & unused. The audit exposed another $1.5 million specialised hospital in Ukhiya that was also unused!
The racist petition page demanding the “removal” of Rohingya refugees from Malaysia is now down & marked as under review. Good - but it should shame everyone who built, signed & amplified it. Its organisers tried to disguise bigotry. Now the petition should be removed permanently.
“Modi & Min Aung Hlaing did not address the media after their meeting, unlike most bilateral talks involving visiting heads of state or government in New Delhi.” — AP Perhaps because mass murder, genocide, anti-Muslim politics & military dictatorship are difficult subjects in front of the cameras?
Remove Malaysia’s anti-Rohingya petition. I have written to change.org asking them to remove the petition calling for the “removal” of Rohingya from Malaysia, now with over 417k signatures. This petition targets a stateless refugee community & helps turn xenophobia into a mass, shareable campaign.
A Malaysian petition calling for the “removal” of Rohingya refugees has gathered more than 90k signatures. What is striking is not only the demand, but the language around it - resources, security, public order, “humane solutions”, third-country resettlement. Full analysis coming shortly.
Another undeniable act of maritime piracy by the Israeli Navy. Hijacking (not intercepting) civilian vessels 75 miles off Cyprus and violently cutting communications is a lawless assault on humanitarian aid. And the detention of over 100 international activists is state-sponsored abduction. 👇
Rohingya activist Ko Tinmaung speaks from the Sumud Flotilla with a message of solidarity: “The cause of the Rohingya is not separate from the cause of the Palestinian people.” From Arakan to Gaza, oppressed people recognise each other’s wounds & each other’s freedom. Free Palestine. Free Rohingya
New analysis: Bangladesh’s Elections and the Rohingya in Army Trucks This week: roundups, family separations, camps sealed and silence from major Rohingya organisations. I examine what this says about power, containment and deference. Read here: x.com/shafiur/stat...
PUBLISHED TODAY: "Human Rights in Bangladesh." Odhikar’s new report ignores Bangladesh’s treatment of the Rohingya, the country’s most serious, long-running human rights issue. No scrutiny of camp governance or repatriation policy. odhikar.org/bangladesh-a...
Jamaat staged a big rally in Cox’s Bazar yesterday. Its leader, Shafiqur Rahman, introd local candidate Noor Ahmed Anwari. There was no discussion of the Rohingya, despite more than 1m Ro being confined in the area & the issue being framed as one of Bangladesh’s top security & funding concerns. 🤔
Humanitarianism: Ukhiya News absolutely nails Bangladesh’s Rohingya strategy in one image. $1 million announced. RIGHTS: Zero FUTURE: Unresolved PROTECTION: Outsourced to agencies without power. UNHCR’s Ivo Freijsen thanks donors for scraps. Bangladesh gets PR wins. Rohingya get ration cuts.
NCP Manifesto, Bangladesh Point 35 of the 36-point manifesto: “Through bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, the Rohingya crisis will be resolved on humanitarian grounds, and by joining ASEAN, relations with Southeast Asian countries will be improved.” Read More: whatsapp.com/channel/0029...
A Rakhine Reconstruction Plan? Post-election Rohingya strategy. A Special Commission? More military presence at the border? All discussed in this plush hotel. 👉 Read more on Rohingya Refugee News WhatsApp channel. whatsapp.com/channel/0029...
Zero Point / “No Man’s Land” was attacked and burned on 18 Jan 2023. Community spokesman Dil Mohammed was abducted on 19 Jan and remains detained despite a UN WGAD opinion (published 21 Nov 2025) calling for his release and remedy. Substack: www.rohingyarefugee.news/p/no-mans-la...
ICJ: Yesterday and this morning, lawyers for The Gambia, including Tafadzwa Pasipanodya, presented harrowing evidence of systematic violence. They described door-to-door rampages, the beheading of elderly men, and the public gang rape of women and girls, followed by killings.
A Bangladeshi child was killed in Teknaf (Whaikhyang border) by cross-border gunfire on 11 Jan 2026, as fighting raged in Myanmar between the Arakan Army and Rohingya armed groups. BGB says patrols have been strengthened. Gunfire/explosions have been heard since 8 Jan.
This learning centre in Camp 1 once served over 150 Rohingya children. It now stands empty. This is what the rollback of Rohingya education looks like. pic by Haider Ali #bangladesh #myanmar
This ARNC statement reads less like a reckoning with the past and more like positioning for the future. It’s a reminder of how Rohingya organisations are often forced to align with power even when that power helped create the conditions they still live under.
After the Camp 24–25 fire, Rohingya media were instructed by majhees to document the visit and aid distribution by Dil Mohammed. Emergency relief here is also political theatre - a way authority is made visible, moralised, and circulated. This dynamic was examined in recent RRN reporting. Link 👇

A powerful reflection from Dr Ambia Parveen on the UN’s ruling in the case of Rohingya community leader Dil Mohammed. She reminds us that his disappearance has left deep scars on the community and that justice now depends on Bangladesh implementing the WGAD recommendations without delay.
Rohingya political figures say his detention harms efforts to organise the community for future return to Myanmar. Deputy Human Rights Minister (NUG) Aung Kyaw Moe: “Grassroots leaders like Dil Mohammed are crucial for organising the community for a safe and dignified return to Myanmar.”
His counsel, international barrister Haydee Dijkstal, says he was detained in conditions “akin to a blacksite” and subjected to threats against his family.
Dil Mohammed was the spokesperson for the No Man’s Land (Zero Point) Rohingya encampment on the Bangladesh–Myanmar border, where he engaged with diplomats, UN officials, and the media for years. He was abducted in January 2023 as the camp was destroyed.
