#CartAugust All the blue lines on the map are rivers! The biggest is the Lifebringer, which runs across much of western Isaia. It's relatively safe to navigate, though there are high cliffs above it in places. Prior to the war, it was a major waterway, with goods being brought up and down via boat.

#AugustWorldbuilders I'm going to share a snippet in here. This is Raesella, my teacher character in Born to Die. Her students are mostly 4-7. She was known to be strict, but caring and kind in the classroom. Outside it, she was more of an introvert, but had a strong sense of duty.

“If we stay here, the bad men will find us. They will come here, and they will torture you, and force you to do terrible things, and kill you. They might do that last one by burning you alive.”
Twenty three pairs of terrified eyes stared at her.
“If we leave this schoolhouse… The same thing might happen.”
A few of the smaller children began to cry.
“But it might not. We have a chance. We might escape.” Raesella looked at them. “Do you remember I taught you definitely and probably?”
The children nodded.
“If we stay here, we will definitely die. If we leave, we will only probably die.” Her voice trembled. “Those that want to come with me, raise your hand.”
Twenty three hands went into the air.

“What happened?”
“I tripped,” Volanci replied dryly. A story he'd heard from beaten partners two dozen times.
“You–” Makso looked past him at Eylina and Kasirai, and then back to Volanci’s eyes. “Did she push you?”
“I did no such thing. He tripped,” Eylina said.
Makso opened and closed his mouth, then shook his head. “You can't expect me to believe that. This has gone far enough.” He stepped past Volanci and strode over to Kasirai. “Come here, little one.”

She had known the White Rush, the river that ran through Liansis, to burst its banks four times while she was a child, the water eagerly gulping up the surrounding land. Except that had been greenland, a place for plants and wildlife. Here in Crisom it was concrete and buildings, bricks and cobblestone.
And the entire lot of it was currently twenty-five spans underwater.

Kinjorl glanced at the entrance to his tent. “We won’t have a choice. If our men start falling sick, we can’t risk spreading it as we march. The only thing we can do is stay here and see who the gods spare.”

Silver stuck the lever through a loop in her belt and splashed her way over to join the two. “Somewhere round here?” she asked, feeling about under the water with one boot. The smaller rat sniffled and nodded. Something caught around her boot, too hard and solid to be long grass or bushes. Silver reached down to grasp it and pull it out.
It was long and white, longer than her forearm – unlike the lever – with each of the five fingers still attached.
DD stared at it with wide bug eyes. “Is— Is that—?”

“Miss?” asked Loyena. “What’s wrong with Kaya? Is she sick?”
Raesella crouched and laid a hand on Kaya’s chest. Nothing. She felt for her pulse. Nothing. When she removed her hands, they came away warm and sticky with blood.
“There’s nothing we can do for her,” she said.
“Can’t you wake her up?” Loyena asked. Her voice trembled.
“She’s not sleeping!”

Snow twisted and danced through the air, a new addition to what had already fallen in the past few weeks. Luca watched it through the window, absently stroking Varra’s hair with one hand. In the past, she would have used days like this to drink and find someone to fuck. Viv, preferably, she was still the best person Luca had ever fucked, but a substitute worked when she was not around.

Night’s chill had set in, casting its fingers over the lower streets of the city. Thick shadows crawled over the cracked stone, undeterred by the flickering orange light of the few lanterns struggling to remain lit. Raucous laughter echoed from one of the pubs, echoing in the night.
Against the wall of one alleyway, three children huddled together from the cold and dark in their threadbare clothes. The boy wore no shoes, the girl no jacket, the toddler neither, her fluffy hair clinging to her thin little face. It was a dry night, which was a relief, but the biting chill and soft wind would persist, clawing at their skin and bones.
