My beloved Stephen Herek just had his classic BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE added to the Criterion Channel. If they were serious they'd also add CRITTERS. Do it, Criterion. Curate a "Directed by Stephen Herek" Collection.
I love the new EVIL DEAD films but the fanboy in me wishes they would start having some more fun with the Deadite designs. They're all just kinda...pale gray sweaty looking zombies. We need to get back to this stuff:
Favorites of 2026 so far (that I've seen). And yes internet, the Star Wars "slop" movie AND the 80s toy "slop" movie are both on my list. Why? Because they aren't slop.

I'm offended at myself for not seeing 2010: THE YEAR WE MADE CONTACT until now. Movie rocks. Kinda like PSYCHO II to 2001's PSYCHO - 2010 was initially dismissed outright, only to be rediscovered as great in its own right years later. Peter Hyams is one of the best journeymen to ever do it.
HEX, directed with supreme craft by Kuei Chih-Hung (THE BOXER'S OMEN) & is another SB gem. The camera glides & caresses the opulent house most of the film takes place in, getting you acquianted with every nook & cranny. Twistier than it initially appears. This is an EC comics style spook-a-blast.
OILY MANIAC is madcap genre alchemy from SHAW BROS. A goopy cavalcade of all of the hallmarks of exploitation cinema filtered through the Shaw lens. Do you like wackly optical effects? OILY MANIAC has you covered. Hell, most Shaw Bros. horror films have you covered in that regard.
SEEDING OF A GHOST is pure 80s Shaw Bros black magic mayhem. A phantasmagoric shot of sleaze & high energy supernatural set pieces that escalate to a ghoulishly delightful finale of blood, tentacles, and rent flesh.
This is his year. My franchise ranking (spoilers I love the whole damn thing) based on how I feel at the moment. Next Friday the 13th it's possible this ranking looks totally different, lol. #Fridaythe13th #slasher #JasonVoorhees #killhermommykillher

Alls I'm saying is a movie with an opening shot like this can't be bad. I will forever maintain TMNT III is better than Secret of the Ooze. It tells more of a story, with more emotional weight & earnestness. Yea the turtle suits are a major downgrade, but it's not a deal-breaker.
One of my favorite watches in a while. A melancholic rust belt neo-noir that steadily walks into fatalistic tragedy. Walken has rarely been better as the all too human villain, Brad Sr. A new favorite, but a total gut-punch. That Patrick Leonard score, too. Urgh, so good.
