Making progress. Ransom is always super excited for walks but isn’t great about loose leash. I’m kind of training him in a round about way. We have a solid heel command now and I’ve transitioned that into a ‘follow’ command. I’m hoping I can get ‘follow’ instilled so he just follows on walks.
Prepped huge batch of chicken taco meat. Then several pounds of fried chicken. Last night I passed out for a couple hours after making a tandoori marinade. Got off the couch at 1:30am and cut nasty parts from several pounds of chicken tenders and mixed with the tandoori marinade. Im Chicken Rich!
Anyone else noticing trees producing tons of fruit this year? My apple trees are breaking branches. Pine tree bases are covered in devoured pine cones supporting a booming squirrel population. I’m guessing the weather triggered something in the trees.
After searching for shoes with a wider toe box, I narrowed in on Altras and Topo brands. The Altras were comfy but Rei happened to have an extra wide pair of Topos. I am impressed. Toes aren’t smooshed. Feet feel good and well supported. It’s almost a confidence boost walking without discomfort.
Surprise of the weekend. I found a handful of Coyote tobacco, my preferred smoking tobacco. These must of been from seeds I spread 3-5 years ago. We did a bunch of soil moving with a tractor and brought the seeds back to the surface in the process. Kind of neat.
Sniffer in action. Ransom didn’t see where the stick went so he started sniffing around. You can see the moment he locks onto the scent. We did nose work as a puppy and he happens to have a really good sense of smell.
I’m impressed with how well Ransom handles the river current. Although the water is moving fast, it’s not very deep and washes into shallows so I don’t have any safety concerns. The current works in my favor adding resistance training to fetch. Probably did 100+ throws over the weekend.
Coyote on Cow. It’s a tradition! I’m happy that the Coyote on cow sculpture in downtown Kirkland gets dressed up for every holiday. I also appreciate art that doesn’t necessarily make sense. Like why is there a Coyote on cow sculpture?
We essentially made a spread sheet to keep track of Ransom’s toys. Most everything here has a unique name that Ransom knows. This is about 2/3 of his toys. The other third are at our cabin in the mountains which we’ll document this weekend. Had to make a list because his memory is better than mine.
Happy Pride! @yotice.bsky.social and I walking back from a movie & passed a couple 12 yo boys with arms over each other like cartoon drunks. I was thinking ‘that looks pretty gay’. As we pass, they ask if we’re a couple. Then they ask, how long. I said 2008. They start whooping and say Happy Pride!
French fries were a huge hit at the camp out. I had a hell of a time with a slight breeze sucking all the heat of the wok. Luckily we had a rusted out barrel just the right size to slip over the wok burner. I almost bailed on the idea of French fries but I’m really happy I went through with it.
Look at that tail floof. One of the reasons we picked Ransom was he had more white on his tail than his siblings. It’d allow us to see him better at night as we often work outside until dark. The white on a border collie’s tail was historically called a ‘Shepherd’s Lantern’.
Wow. Just looked at a video of an elk in our forest and it found Ransom’s Chuckit ball and started playing with it.
This goof jumped into the trailer and stood there waiting for me to take him somewhere. He’ll do the same thing if the truck tailgate is down. I generally keep him in the truck or truck bed when I’m driving around the property and he enjoys the ride.
Rare video of a waggy coyote. They caught the scent of a mouse and got very happy over the prospect of a snack.
We started the plant paradox diet this weekend, trying to reduce stomach issues. It’s been amazing so far. Perfect digestion and no discomfort. The theory is Lectins are produced by plants to keep insects and animals from eating them. By avoiding them, your gut thanks you.
Cooling off in the shade next to a creek. Saturday was warm and I took several breaks to cool down and listen to the water.
They had to program openai to stop talking about raccoons because it was injecting them into conversations.
Tried making hempseed tofu last night. Turned out pretty good. It doesn’t have a ton of flavor at first, but finishes with a nutty cheesy flavor. The solids removed early in the process, were retained and mixed with a little salt and probiotics to make a nut cheese after it sits for 48-72 hours.
I just learned yesterday that you can peel a kiwi with a spoon. Way faster than peeling with a knife like I’ve always done. It actually makes them accessible as a snack at work.
Chai only shows up in one episode of Kevin but I think she’s the standout character of the season. They did a really good job portraying a collie.
