I had no idea so I just looked this up! Preston Hollow neighborhood in northern Dallas.

George W. Bush became governor of Texas in 1994, and lived in the state-provided Governor’s Mansion in Austin. Towards the end of his term, he started looking for a more elaborate Texas spread to call his own, and in 1999 purchased a 1,500 acre hog farm in Crawford, down the road from Waco, known as the Prairie Chapel Ranch. He won the Presidency in 2000, and served for two terms, during which his ranch in Crawford became another Western White House, like Ronald Reagan’s and Lyndon Johnson’s ranches. He built several structures there while president, including the four-bedroom main house, designed by University of Texas professor and architect David Heymann, and a guest house. Other buildings on the property include a helicopter hangar, and an old farm house. After the presidency, George W. Bush bought a 8,500 square foot house in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in northern Dallas, an affluent neighborhood, where people like Ross Perot also have homes, though he continues to go to Crawford on weekends and holidays.

Looking at population to deaths, it looks like the EU heat deaths are about equal to the US gun deaths. Which is a weird comparison since the gun deaths include murder. It did get me to compare other issues between countries and maternal deaths during childbirth are an interesting comparison:

In 2022, there were 22 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births in the U.S. — more than double, sometimes triple, the rate for most other high-income countries in this analysis. In half of the countries, there were less than five maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

Seriously? Homegrown tomatoes aren't as good as store bought? At what point do people see through this guy?

Musk was asked how his companies would make money in this version of the future, and he insisted that “money won’t matter in 2036.” He claimed that everyone would have a high income from doing nothing and that people might still perform some kind of labor as a hobby, much in the same way that people might grow their own tomatoes in a home garden. Musk insisted backyard tomatoes weren’t as good as those you can buy from the store, but people still do it anyway. That would be news to anyone who’s had a delicious backyard tomato, which frequently tastes much better.

This whole thread is good. I have MAGA family and acquaintances on FB and continue to post anti-Trump stuff because I know it annoys them. I also put a lot of patriotism and flags in my comments because I would cede that to them. Trump has taken enough and I won't give up everything.

This kind of sums it up. Trump cancelled the Obama agreement with Iran and never did anything to make a new agreement. This has been Trump's MO the whole time - try to take advantage of the U.S. place in the world while blustering and breaking things and counting on the rest of the world to need us enough to clean up. I'm afraid that Trump (and the Republican Party that has enabled and assisted him) may have irrevocably broken this country 😢

The one thing I won't do though is give up. It's only too late if people give up. This country has done amazing things when it stands up to wrong ideas. We can do it again. God bless the U.S.A!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Here’s the short version. Canada’s area burned has surged, and it has surged in step with warming: hot, dry fire seasons burn far more forest, with area burned rises roughly 80% for each 1C increase in fire-season temperature (with a correlation coefficient of 0.61). This relationship is robust to a variety of statistical tests and controlling for confounding variables. The boreal burns in rare, high-intensity crown fires on a natural cycle measured in a century or more, across enormous remote areas that have never been logged, thinned, or effectively suppressed. Only about a fifth of Canada’s burned area over the past four decades was even inside forest regions that have ever been actively managed. You cannot have a fuel-buildup from forest mismanagement in a forest you were never managing.

Trump and his administration should be constantly questioned when he says that "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon." There has been no proof that they were anywhere near a nuclear weapon and Mr. "I can make a deal" should be constantly asked why he couldn't negotiate a deal with Iran - Obama did.

This time, according to NewsNation, Trump said that his central objective in this war is “never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.” But Iran does not have a nuclear weapon and was not even close to obtaining one when Trump launched this conflict. Trump has since claimed that Tehran was “two weeks” from creating a bomb, an assertion no serious analyst—and no intelligence agency, in the U.S. or anywhere else—has supported.

The night the war began, however, the White House issued taped remarks by the president in which Trump seemed to have had one overriding war aim: regime change. He told the Iranian people that “the hour of your freedom is at hand,” and that when the U.S. campaign was finished, they should “take over” their government. “It will be yours to take,” he said, but as with some of his other declarations, he has since backed off, protesting that he never had any interest in toppling the Iranian regime—or, at other times, claiming that he in fact did topple the regime because he killed a lot of Iranian leaders (which is obviously not the same thing as “regime change”).

This is why people are upset by the Democratic Senators statements on Graham. I'm sure people would still complain but not in the same way if the Senators would give statements more similar to Kinzinger's statement. Focused on their friendship while acknowledging their significant differences.

Lindsey Graham and I had a complicated relationship.

Before Trump, we were friends. We traveled together on congressional trips around the world, including visiting Syrian refugee camps where we met children whose lives had been shattered by war. Those moments reminded us why public service mattered.

After Trump, we went in very different directions, and we eventually stopped speaking. I never hid those disagreements, and I won’t rewrite that history today.

But death has a way of putting things in perspective. I choose to remember the man I knew before our paths diverged—the one who cared deeply about America’s role in the world and wasn’t afraid to see suffering up close.

Rest in peace, Lindsey. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him.

The median pay at a majority (75%) of the companies is lower than the income minimum for a family of three to be eligible for Medicaid in most states. At 13 of the companies, median pay was also lower than the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program income threshold for a family of three.

Nearly a quarter of Walmart employees (29.3%) and half of Amazon workers (48.4%) in the Nevada – which collects Medicaid enrollment numbers among employees at large companies – were on Medicaid in 2024, according to the report.

Among the four states that disclose Snap data related to large companies – Colorado, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Michigan – 10,920 Walmart workers and 9,633 Amazon workers were enrolled in Snap in 2024.

The report noted Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” is expected to result in some 7.5 million Americans losing Medicaid and 4 million losing some or all of their Snap benefits after budget cuts.

A person who worked at Mithril Capital Management in 2016 told the Wall Street Journal that in the year Vance was there, he never once saw him in the office. Another former colleague told the Journal that he remembered seeing Vance, but also that the newly acclaimed author spent a good deal of time promoting Hillbilly Elegy. Neither person could remember any significant deals Vance worked on while at Mithril, which is named after a fictional precious metal featured in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

In the years ahead, Donald Trump would accuse the entire Democratic Party of being demonic. Tucker Carlson would claim that he had been mauled by a demon in his sleep. Steve Bannon would call Lutheran and Catholic activists who help immigrants demonic. A federal emergency-management official would speak of being teleported to a Waffle House 50 miles away, elaborating that he was not sure whether the transporting forces were “good” or “evil.” J. D. Vance would say of UFOs, “I don’t think they’re aliens. I think they’re demons.” And the same apostles and prophets who’d claimed that God had anointed Trump to be president would encourage him to see his war with Iran as a cosmic showdown with a demonic entity known as the Prince of Persia.

I come from a long line of Masons so this obsession with Masons is interesting.

She began gathering what she called “spiritual intelligence.” She kept track of what demons had been identified during deliverances at the Well. As she drove around the area, she told me, she made note of Masonic lodges, tarot-card readers, and anything else that made her feel uneasy. She paid attention to her dreams. Then came the day that Mike noticed an event posted on Facebook, an upcoming fundraiser for local foster kids that involved death-metal and drag performances. The Murvul Punk Toy Drive was being held at a bookstore right across the street.

In 2021, Rousseau was the subject of a civil suit by the State of Virginia due to Patriot Front's defacing of a statue of African-American tennis player Arthur Ashe, which Rousseau never challenged, resulting in a default judgment pending for vandalism, should he ever set foot in Virginia again.[13]

Don jr. And Eric behind Trump. Both of their suits look ill fitting but Don Jr.'s especially. The pants are baggy around his ankles and I have no idea what kind of shoes he's wearing.

I thought this was a reasonable look at the issue.

As someone who splits his time between the United States and France, I’ve seen firsthand how Americans tend to interpret discomfort as a failure of infrastructure, whereas Europeans seem much more willing to regard it as part of life. These contrasting views have resulted in far too much air-conditioning on one side and not remotely enough on the other.

I got to this section and couldn't read and further. I'm pretty sure this happened the last time I tried to read this article.

He longs for a world in which great men are free to work their will on society, unconstrained by government or regulation or “redistributionist economics” that would impinge on their wealth and power—or any obligation, really, to the rest of humanity. He longs for radical new technologies and scientific advances on a scale most of us can hardly imagine. He takes for granted that this kind of progress will redound to the benefit of society at large.

More than anything, he longs to live forever.

Thiel does not believe death is inevitable. Calling death a law of nature is, in his view, just an excuse for giving up. “It’s something we are told that demotivates us from trying harder,” he said. He has spent enormous sums trying to evade his own end but feels that, if anything, he should devote even more time and money to solving the problem of human mortality.

This is an incredible piece - it captures how this whole fiasco is ending and why. I know Trump has had no principles but Tom shows how this has played into this mess. The whole article should be read but the key points for me are below.

Trump, for his part, started denying that regime change was ever a goal—“I never cared about regime change,” he said a few weeks ago—while asserting at the same time that he had, in fact, effected a change in regime by killing a lot of top Iranian leaders. Trump has since left even that argument behind: He is negotiating with members of the same Iranian regime that existed four months ago, but now Trump calls them “very rational people” who are “nice to deal with,” who are “not radicalized,” and who are “you know, looking to help their country.”

The answer is that Trump is utterly transactional, and displays no guiding principles beyond his own self-interest. Just as Trump jettisons friends and allies if they become an annoyance or a burden (often with a declaration that he never liked them anyway), the president also dumps policies and initiatives for much the same reason. If something looks like it will benefit him in some way—glory, adulation, money—he’ll do it. And if a scheme goes badly, he will do anything to get out of it, regardless of the costs to others.

Trump’s shallowness means that the United States has no actual foreign policy. The American nation—with all of its considerable economic and military resources—is now like a massive robot that has had its programming deleted and its memory wiped. Trump, the new owner who did not bother to read the instructions, twiddles the knobs of its remote control, spinning dials and jabbing at buttons while the gigantic and powerful United States of America lumbers about, walking in circles, bumping into walls, and smashing things, without direction or purpose.

Trump does not think he surrendered, because surrendering means abandoning important beliefs. He has none. For Trump, capitulation to Iran is just another deal. For the rest of us, it will be something a lot more dangerous.

My husband was just asking yesterday if "truck bed liner" is what they applied! If so, doesn't that add to these comments that make it unlikely someone could take a knife to it?

STEVE GOODALE: You have to consider environmental conditions and humidity and dust and contamination from other products that you're using.

TREISMAN: Trump said on Truth Social that vandals had sliced a 250-foot gash in the pool's facade and poured corrosive chemicals in the water. But Goodale says that claim raises more questions than answers because of the strength of the coating that was applied to the pool.

GOODALE: Something that you would have to work pretty hard at, I think, to cause damage to it. If it's securely bonded to the substrate, that stuff is darn near impenetrable.

TREISMAN: Another potential culprit is the hydrogen peroxide that park service workers poured into the pool last week. That was part of their efforts to kill the algae. Goodale says it's possible that those chemicals disrupted the bond layer between the surface and the coating, but it's hard to say without more data.
