Her lights flared around her as she put her hands together and shot off three beams of light high above in short bursts. They arced and fizzled out before touching the lake. The rush of heat through her veins was almost maddening until her magic calmed and dispersed, leaving her slightly out of breath.
It took another minute of trying to control her breathing and reigning those emotions back in before she could face Riodin again, realizing he had now witnessed two of her meltdowns
He was so unbothered, aside from the tiniest uptick of his brows. “Feel better?”
Already past her daily limit of dealing with annoying men for the day, she sneered at him. “Ready when you are.”

Her mouth ticked up with every pluck, every hand-off, every lingering glance back at her when her fingers grazed his.
This went on until she had over a dozen flowers, a small bouquet of rich blue-purple blooms. “Okay, I think that’s enough,” she said at last when her hands were full. Her stomach fluttering had started out subtle but now she felt it in her chest, her pulse quickening to keep up.
“Thank you,” she added quickly as his steps slowed to walk next to her again. She held up the bouquet between them. “These are pretty.”
Her heart flipped when his eyes moved from the flowers to her, and for a second those gold flecks turned molten. “So pretty.”
He looked away just as the airiest heat crept up her neck and she brought the bunched flowers up and pressed her face to them, hiding the scarlet taking over and the stupid grin she didn't even try to fight.

“And if you were attacked?”
She hoped she would never have to find out. “I’d hope so.”
“You should figure that out sooner than later.”
Kassidy almost rolled her eyes at him. “I did say that I’m trying.”
He stared her down for a moment too long, until she stiffened and goosebumps rose over her bare arms, an ancient internal alarm bell going off like prey being hunted. She needed to put more space between them, but her feet rooted her to the ground, less than a foot away from him.
He took a looming step forward, and she finally broke out of her rigidity and stumbled back to get away from him, only to have him step closer still. “What are you—”
“This isn’t personal, Idol,” he said in this warning tone that had her taking another step back only to have him move up into her space—
And then he kicked her legs out from under her.

Kassidy landed hard on her forearms as she threw out her hands to brace her fall, stunned for almost too long. She scrambled to get to her feet, knees bent and body low as she jumped back when he went to grab for her.
He was too fast and didn’t miss the second time; he snatched her by the wrist next, her instincts snapping into place. Every fiber of her nervous system was screaming at her to fight back. She pulled away from him, one foot far behind her in a split stance before twisting her arm and using her elbow to jam it into his forearm.
She freed herself, but only for a moment before he grabbed her by her arm, jerking her to him. Kassidy tried to twist out of his grip but he got her by her other arm and pinned both behind her.
“You know how to break this.” He said it like a taunt, a challenge.
“Let go,” she hissed. Her chest ached, overwhelming her senses. She didn’t dare try to struggle, her shoulders burning with the slightest movement.
“Break the hold,” he hissed into her ear.

No, he was not getting attached.
He repeated it over and over as he wove his way through the halls, passing guards who gave glaring looks, until he was standing before her door again and furiously knocking. The guard stationed there now gave an indignant huff, but he ignored it, his focus narrowing entirely on this infuriating woman.
She opened the door and ‌looked as if she was also on the verge of tears, peering up at him—

All at once, the winds calmed, and everything was quiet except for the sound of the waves lapping against the ship. The waves groaned against the hull as the vessel rocked in place on the stilling waters. Merwyn strained against an unknown pull, his brow furrowing and mouth a tight line as he focused his magic, sweat gathering on his forehead.
A roar from beneath the waves echoed around them, reverberating through Kassidy’s body as she and everyone on board froze. The sea stirred not far in the distance, as if trying to resist the magic holding it in place.
Power flickered within her, ice and dread spearing through her veins, then her lights flared out as the water began to open.
