I'm a little skeptical about this because my google-fu isn't turning up anything about that book or a reddit post or anything. That aside, what I don't understand is why the central figure changed from when the image was first posted in February.

Right, but I think the point is that that means the guy on the left has a backwards flag on his uniform (stars on the right). It's weird, but that's actually correct - the flag is usually "backwards" on military uniforms because that's symbolic of a flag moving forward across the field.
It's like the overall setup for the Two Minutes Hate from 1984 except with some bonus Exodus-style golden idol worship
