There seems to be speciation happening across elevations but we don't know why. Massive phenotypic differences, closel phylogenetic relationships. No clear barrier to dispersal so no idea yet why this happen: both ecological gradient & mid-elevation barrier seems implausible Any ideas? #SAGE2026

Not a herpetologist but my research career was kickstarted by a herpetologist supervisor and these detailed microhabitat recordings as well as heavy statistics in anything measurable is how I did my works in mammals. Great mentorship goes a long way to next generations of scientists 🙂 #SAGE2026

Second plenary: Dr Thomas von Rintelen from MfN Berlin reviewed recent biogeography research in SEA, using everyone's favourite island Sulawesi then moving to advertising how to better study dark taxonomy using AI & robotics. I think his most interesting take is to ditch barcoding 👀 #SAGE2026

First plenary: Dr Wijarn Simachaya from Thailand Environmental Institute reviewed threats to biodiversity in Thailand, as well as national commitment to fix it. The AR3T framework is part of the nature positive economy they seek to do in that regards. Happy to see my fav MSG on board 🥰 #SAGE2026

Happy to be attending Southeast Asian conference in Evolution at #SAGE2026 in Phuket, Thailand! Only happened once every 4-5 years gathering distinct scientific community; you don't wanna miss it when it happens! Grand venue, generous goodie bag, extraordinary evolutionary biology, good food 🤌🏼👌🏼

I think the posters in S15 #SMBE2026 are as good as the talks and this is just few of the many cool ones I managed to see in time. I did not manage to talk to the presenters for these ones 🥲 so I just put this here to show my appreciation for the work you did (I am a fan!)

Nonetheless, I'm pretty humbled by the available talks & posters being presented in S15 #SMBE2026! My major take away is that extra variables (e.g. time series, env var, etc) helps you working with "impossible" systems. Props to @aidaandres.bsky.social who made Drosophila an impossible system 😆

It was a great experience chairing S15 sympo at #SMBE2026 with @carolinapacheco.bsky.social & Cindy, but it was tainted by Anubhab's absence, which is a reminder that the world is not equally open to all. Imagine the kinds of talks we can get if the world is more open!

I came to appreciate the intriguing difficulties of determining what CAUSES a disease with multiple symptoms. Is it bacteria/virus? Which one? Why the histology does not match? What is IT? - Copenhagen Zoo research seminar presented by Yannick Van de Weyer who invetigate hydrocoelom in Bombina.

I cannot believe there are this many Indonesians in #ESEB2025 After so long of being almost the only Indonesian in these kinds of conferences, I am just so happy to have found *literally* my people. I hope many more to come from Indonesia studying evolutionary biology around the EU 🥹

#ESEB2027 will be a hub meetings! Not sure if I will can afford still be around EU at that time, but those who can please do join, it has been a fun experience.

Mike Ritchie reminded to publish in your society journals to keep things rolling. Overpriced journals from big publishers did not circle back their money to society! Surprised the EU still need to be reminded, I thought many funding bodies acknowledged review-community platforms. #ESEB2025

Johanna Mappes on figuring out what behind the aposematic colors of tiger moth. Apparently predator community affects how the morphs alter in frequency. I like how researchers increasingly acknowledge their shortcomings on their scientific process; it encourages early career researchers! #ESEB2025

I am definitely biased here but I enjoyed Love Dalén talk on deep-time phylogenomics where ancient samples are changing the divergence times of some species & seeing some genes did not mutate until the last 700ky & how his cool idea gets rejected multiple times. #ESEB2025

Pierre Veron on an attempt bridging microevolutionary process with macroevolution. Apparently with a very high mutation rate it is difficult to speciate because you cannot get fixation and enough divergence to behave as separate species. #ESEB2025

I think Jane Reid's talk, the very few animal among the plants on the assisted gene flow symposium, was v cool. No plotholes, you just cannot skip a second of it. Apparently immigrant sparrows decreases fitness of locals? Outbreeding depression due to immigration load actually happened? #ESEB2025
