Camera/composition/character choreo references and inspiration that played a role for this sequence! Most were personal creative decisions, only the final scene was instructed by my director(s).
The final shot of the song was also requested by Viv. She wanted the final shot like Scar on the spire in Be Prepared. This scene crashed my file so many times because of the massive camera zoom out.
This spinning shot was one of the first visuals I thought of when listening to the radioplay. I planned out their choreography and their little dance in front of the “golden promenade” as an homage to Dorthy and her friends dancing on the yellow brick road to Emerald city.
For these scenes, Vel and Val sing low-to-high notes, I boarded them starting from a lower platform up to a higher platform as they close in to the camera. Vox on the other hand sings high-to-low then high again, hence why he descends the stairs and builds up the anticipation for the next scene.
The last thing I boarded for the sequence was this specific scene of all the Vees. I was stumped on how to pace and transition it properly until I remembered Into The Spiderverse’s use of creative split screens! I’ll go further into it when I make a breakdown video of these sequences in the future.
One of the notes I was provided is Vox has a tendency to touch folks around the shoulders when trying to persuade them/manipulate the situation. As he jumps back down on “Think of all your dreams that could come true!” I had him lock his arms around Vel and Val for that very reason.
The first of many rotation shots I boarded, this was one that Viv requested and thumbnailed for me. I had to come up with a way to hook-up my panels before and after this scene, like a big puzzle piece. One of my many favorite things to do with storyboards!
For the closeup shot of the piano keys, I asked one of the producers to contact @samhaft.com and send me a copy of the piano key sheet so I can draw Vox’s fingers laying on the correct keys. (Left hand on E, right hand on A, C#, E)
My camera choices vary between “symbolism” and “which ones feel nicer.” This scene of Vox reading “…like you, and you, and ME…” I wanted Vox to appear big in comparison to the other Vees. Even though he’s persuading his colleagues, in reality, he wishes to remain the star of the show.
First song I got to board for Season 2 is "Once We Get Up There." This was a turning point for honing my cinematography skills and seeing what I can do with the materials provided for me. It also solidified my appreciation for the Vees. (🧵) #hazbinhotel
