“You seem too worldly to stumble upon us,” he said. “State your business.”
“What does it matter?” Owen asked. “You clearly have something in mind for me.”
The man laughed, low in the back of his throat. “You nobles are all the same. So defiant. and haughty. Our lives were changed and continue to be changed by your decisions, so it’s within our right to watch you squirm. To watch you beg and fight for survival, as we have done. Unfortunately, today we are short of an opponent, so you’ll have to fight my man instead.”
“Why don’t you fight me yourself, then?” Owen asked.
It was difficult to tell who the man was beneath the hood, as he stood with his shoulders stooped and his head bowed. But he was still quite tall, and he was broad enough he had to have some muscle on him. Considering he appeared to be their leader, Owen suspected he didn’t earn the title on brains alone.
“I am more of an archer,” he said. “And I want to see a good show. Come on, let’s get him ready!”

Got a new book the other day! Unfortunately, it's got that Old Book Smell, but I hope I enjoy it anyway. I'm so excited to dive in!

She sighed and sat on the step where she now stood. “I fear I ruined it all.”
He hummed thoughtfully. His feet slapped gently on the stone floor as he climbed down to meet her. “In what way?”
“That I have failed some test, and you will not help me save my people because of it.”
He considered her words for a few moments before sitting beside her. “Perhaps you have,” he said, brow lifted in contemplation. “But that does not mean I won’t save your people.”
Her heart skipped a beat. “So, you will help me?”
“If it matters to you, it will matter to me.”
On the edge of his voice, in spite of her relief, she heard the unspoken.
“But…” she prompted.
“But you have to promise me something,” he said, his gaze unflinching. “Do you know what that is?”

He raised an eyebrow. “What can you offer me?”
“I don’t have the authority to offer much of anything.”
“But if you could, what would you give?”
She stood up abruptly. “I am not going to play these games with you,” she snapped. “I will not be humiliated for whatever purpose you have in mind. Take it or leave it, it’s all that I have. And if you will not—”
If he wouldn’t, there was nothing she could do about it. She was, technically, here entirely at his mercy. If she angered him, he could make her his prisoner. He could take whatever he wanted and give nothing in return, and there was nothing she could do about it. She came here with such girlish hope, that she could make things right and it would be enough just to be here. But he wasn’t wrong to reject it, either.
Raziel stood as well. “I do not wish to humiliate you,” he said softly. “But this is not a decision I can make lightly. You risk only yourself for my entire army. Do you not see the imbalance?”

“I would like to apologize,” she said once they were indoors. Specks of black clouded her vision as her eyes transitioned from bright sunlight. Raziel put a hand on the small of her back.
“For?”
“I have been rude and judgemental. I have allowed the voices of others to cloud my judgement.”
Raziel’s face was clearer now that her eyes had adjusted. He raised one eyebrow, then glanced back at his cousin. Quickly, Lord Alamar walked past them to exit.
Once his footsteps had safely faded in the hall outside, Raziel’s attention turned back to her. “Do go on.”
She fought to roll her eyes. “We had so many winters together,” she explained. “I should know your character by now.”
He considered her words. “A lot can change in fifteen years.”

9. Saturday Snippet A new scene I wrote in the revision recently. Alamar is a new character too, to make the setting more lived-in (and to give Raziel a buddy) #fantasyindiesmaytober

Once her hair was carefully brushed and braided, Bara placed some silver beads in Théa’s hair, and led her out of the bedchamber. Lord Alamar was waiting for her outside. He stood with a relaxed posture, in a sleeveless blue tunic and black pants. His hair was loose, with only the top tied back. When he saw her, he flashed her a broad smile.
“So, I hear we kidnapped you?” he teased.
She glowered up at him. “You could have explained that you weren’t.”
“At what point did anyone even make mention of restraining you or holding you against your will?”
She rolled her eyes.
“I’m hurt, honestly,” he drawled. “I thought we were friends.”
“A lot has changed since then.”
“For you to think I was capable of such things…”
“Please stop.”
He laughed. “You look nice today. More like yourself.”
She bowed her head to graciously accept the compliment. “Thank you.”
“Come on, he wants to see you.”

2. Saturday snippet Here's the opening of my revision of this WIP. I added a prologue since the original draft was written #fantasyindiesmaytober

There was a room in the royal palace that Théa of Maragda loved most of all. It had once been intended for balls and other grand events, with vaulted ceilings and shining marble floors. Now, they simply existed for her own viewing pleasure. The walls were decorated with mosaics made of seashells and blown glass. When the sunlight hit just right, the whole room shone. No matter which direction one looked, there was a sight to behold. From the emerald green mountains of the North to the sky-blue seas of the South, the mosaic depicted every facet of life in Maragda. Instead of depicting kings and queens of old in these tableaus, the ancient gods walked among the common people. Théa had always found this comforting. The gods were more approachable, compared to her ancestors.

And perhaps, she did do it for him. But no one had to know the depths she would stoop for this tired heart of hers. All this way, she had been feeling such conflicting emotions. She had felt hope for the future and she had felt anger for the circumstances. She had felt disdain being forced to walk a path she would have chosen, and she felt anxious to walk it as fast as she could.
