She was hired for one thing. She ended up doing everything.
A tax candidate I spoke with recently came up through Big Four as an indirect tax specialist. That was her lane. That was her niche.

Then a company poached her specifically because indirect tax was their biggest problem. They didn't want a generalist. They wanted her.

But once she was in the door at a fast-growing startup, the problems didn't stay in her lane.

M&A. Transfer pricing. International acquisitions. Taking the company public. 30 entities across the globe. Payroll tax advisory. She learned it all on the job because the business needed it and she was the one there to figure it out.

Eight years later she had an incredibly well rounded tax background.

It's something I see a lot in early-stage companies. They hire for the immediate problem. The person who shows up and solves it ends up owning far more than the job description ever suggested.
