The latest health update

"Oh what a circus, oh what a show..."
A couple of people have messaged asking where the usual start of June (anniversary of the stents) update is.
There's really very little to report that's changed since my post at the start of March - the heart clutches are daily and damned unpleasant when they happen; I'm still getting out thanks to the best friends anyone could ask for; I'm still having days where I can do very little; and I'm definitely needing far, far more sleep than at any time in my life that I can remember.
But still waking up and beating the odds one day at a time and without a doubt that's thanks to all the love and support I'm getting, both in person and virtually...

All good things...

Over 30 years of editing comes to a close this week as even the occasional proofread/copyedit for Titan Books will no longer be feasible. I've had the pleasure of working with some great people at Angry Robot Books, BBC Books, Solaris Books, Aconyte Books, The Black Archive, Chinbeard Books and many others and on the books of some fabulous authors. Magazine editing work included the legendary DreamWatch and the almost as legendary Star Trek Magazine, and I am so grateful for the opportunities that working on both of those afforded me.

My definition of editing has always been helping the writer write what they thought they'd written in the first place. That needs human input - and I hope that the roles of the editor, copyeditor and proofreader continue for the decades to come.

Sci-Fi Bulletin will continue while I still can but retirement and enjoying my last months beckon

An update on my current health situation:

I’ve been putting off posting this update for as long as possible, in the (it now seems) vain hope that things might improve. However, a number of people have been asking what the current situation is – and rumours seem to be spreading that things are actually worse than they are!
Unfortunately, the latest deterioration in my health, since the middle of January, hasn’t just been a blip. As some people know, I had the occasional day at the end of last year when I simply didn’t have the energy to do anything very much at all. Such days are, annoyingly, now becoming more frequent, and all I can do is little more than lie and listen to music, which may seem like a lovely thing to be doing, but trust me, it palls after the sixth or seventh hour…
I am still able to get out (with more help than before, given I tire more easily) thanks to Joe, Kate, Alice, Isabelle and Claire, and I’ve increased the visits from my carer Mary, whose help has been invaluable since I moved into the flat. Although I’d hoped that I’d “bounce back” to where I was in the immediate aftermath of the move here, that’s clearly not going to be the case.
I still very much want to see people – whether in person or on Zoom – but I’m no longer able to do that for as long, and I may need to cancel at short notice… but please do stay in touch!

Keeping on keeping on... went to the screening of Battleship Potemkin at Lewes Depot last night with the Pet Shop Boys score. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in film history, history or of course the Pet Shop Boys. As powerful as when I first saw it as a student too many decades ago
