Did you know? Unlike many seabirds that fly over large distances in search of food, little terns tend to feed close to shore, near their breeding colonies. This unfortunately means they are even more vulnerable to disturbance and can suffer from declines in prey in the areas by their colonies.

This morning our team were joined by a group of amazing volunteers to create this striking piece of sand art, as a reminder to visitors and local people of the thousands of seabirds that are predicted to be killed every year by Berwick Bank offshore windfarm.

In many cases, these birds do not need to be rescued. Young gulls in particular often leave the nest before they are able to fly well. They spend several days on the ground while they develop their flight muscles, and during this time their parents continue to feed and protect them.

This jumpling (razorbill chick) got a little too adventurous for its parents' liking on the Isle of May recently😳 By now, many of these chicks will have lived up to their name and plunged off their cliffside nests into the sea! Good luck out there little jumplings🫡

We had a rather unusual sighting on the Bass Rock over the weekend... This gannet nest has TWO chicks in it! This could be from an egg rolling into another nest, a chick getting lost, or (in rare cases) gannets can sometimes have two eggs... What do you think has happened here?🤔 📷©️Sophie Wilson

I'm not super tern, but I am a little tern... July's seabird of the month is the tiny terrier of the seabird world - the beautiful, delicate, and feisty Little Tern! Look out for little terns nesting along sandy or shingle beaches around the Scottish coastline in summer⛱️

Our seabird of the month for June is NOT a penguin! It's the Common Guillemot. These sleek and striking seabirds are a larger cousin of the puffin and nest in large colonies around our coastal cliffs islands here in Scotland.

Guga Hunt - New Report📢 Today we've published a new report warning that Scotland’s seabirds are under increasing pressure and calling for an end to licensing of the guga hunt on Sula Sgeir. This follows news this week that a new application for a license has been made for 2026.
