Let's use this time to dispel the idea that the configuration only looks good for anime or SD content. Here are some HD and 4K screenshots (forgive any social media compression). You can also easily take screenshots in MPV with CRTL+B

Why would you want to use this if you already have something like VLC? MPV ensures the colors and subtitles are displayed properly. The real-time upscale creates a better looking image than older video players.

Did you know that there was a new update to our MPV configuration earlier this month? Now, the builder and installer will configure MPV based on your hardware, improving performance.

What's next?

The original v1 had problems with dark details, this is most noticeable on the hand in the left image. The new version doesn't have this problem, as a result, dark details look better in the new version.

A few seconds later, this shot has a bright glowing effect. In the our release version (left), the glow is around 99% brightness, nearly the maximum possible. But on the right it's now clipped, which is what happens when you try and exceed the video limit.

If we adjusted our newly released CC (left) to this new example brightness, it would look more like what's on the right. This image may look nice an eye catching, but there's a problem...

But how do you know how much leveling you should do? It isn't always obvious. Let's say for example we wanted our levels to match the source material. In these examples, Roshi's beard is around 95% brightness.

"Leveling" refers to adjusting the levels, or brightness, of video. In the Dragon Box source, the video is often (but not always) darker than the original source material. Therefore, our newly leveled video will look brighter and better than it did before.

Subtitles have also been improved in terms of translations, style, and timing.

You'll hear audio improvements in the both the Japanese and English tracks. Big thanks @krycek7o2.bsky.social and others for extensive work on the original Funimation track.

Can't download the new version yet? Don't worry, some episodes were pretty good looking already and only have smaller improvements. We managed our time and focused on more challenging areas.
