Somedays the headlines are like 1984, some days like the parable of the sower.
Effective Altruism is ramping up social media influencing for their ideology as... effective use of $ to fear monger for future lives saved in speculative fictitious futures but there is an EA event in SF every 3 days or so: picnics, walks, parties. Imagine the $ once Anthropic stocks are cashed out
2 signs in the Bay Area capture different kinds of anger at AI tools, consequences & forms of community education. Swanky neighborhood sign's AI is optional, harming others, call to action is read more. The other sign's AI is for jailing, control, fear. It warns for safety. AI hits different.
I'd like to give this talk again. Its even more relevant. But what artists and the orgs that support us want is money. It's a crisis: orgs closing, jobs are few, rent is higher, I know the arts are drowning but that tech hand isn't there to pull us out. We gotta swim in this flood.
Here's an AI generated video preying on workplace fears selling one of the many AI certification courses that are flooding the markets scamming the public out of $ It's less scammy sounding than the one above but they function by plucking similar emotional strings.
Two ads to consider together in the context of AI marketing and the power of belief. First is for the controversial note taking AI gizmo pocket that records your conversations, possibly illegally. Next one in thread.
I finally and very joyously after long archival research found my ancestral home in Hawaii, the precise spot where we had an oceanic caretaking duty, only to find the military made a video showing off how they bombed our coral and are now attempting to illegally expand & destroy more
My dad died. He was a flight controller for the first unmanned Apollo mission 1966. Honorman at his barely desegregated boot camp in 1956. Always top of class & NATIVE HAWAIIAN! He came from fisherman, farmers, railroad workers, & sugarcane plantations. He was the world's best dad. 💗Rest in AC/DC💗
Nice PhD you got there would be a shame if nothing were to happen with it. I interviewed a few EA people during a project, one confided she didn't really align and had criticism, but she was so dependent on the financial, edu, & social support they provide. EA growth is defined as effective in EA
Still going strong, beloved local bodega cat was hit by a waymo in October. RIP kit cat
Brian had an archivist mind, a sharp memory, & an understanding of culture as a political force. But then he did a bunch of dumb fun shit too. He had great taste in books, film, music & comix. I will miss teasing him about libertarians. RIP weirdo, I love you so much💗 reason.com/2026/03/14/b...
Poll green is negative yellow positive feelings. AI is the Gavin Newsom of tech I guess.
I think the visual of the youtube talk is like a Holbein painting and tells it like it is about narrative and sector capture: the mic passing aimlessly, credentials hanging on necks, the shoulder to shoulder barricade of it, heads gleaming like the teeth of a skull, chewing nothing.
AI ads in SF are like "don't take this the wrong way but..". The public is viewed like a targeted conquest at a bar approached via some pick up artist manual, to belittle and neg until we are seduced into some AI relationship when we could do better. All the marketing is so full of contempt for us
This seems right to me. That this alternative right wing media and pop is a very interconnected counterculture with its own language, signifiers, hierarchies and power of belief and identity. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...
Friend tried & could not share the ICE wiki link on Facebook so I tried and yes even as comment, the wiki is censored. Am I now on a list for testing to see if Meta blocked this Url? Not surprising, but w tiktok censorship of ICE critical speech, is it by request & not voluntary. Slippery slope
Non tik tok social media is full of people sharing that their posts on US politics, Minnesota events, privacy, have been silently banned. Wiener is a California state senator. Some activist accounts have been fully banned. Tiktok blaming power outage but users disagree and say it was targeted
Props I made for a performance art piece ages ago are relevant today
No he isn't. This kind of framing is common. Media competes for attention using panic. It transmits a narrative that this wave of generative tools is a world ending force, thus overvaluing companies like open AI without regard for how costly they are to run vs what we're willing to pay
Karp's viral interview was unusual for him which is why it went viral. It was not punching down but up. DEI as PR stunt from Palantir is not unusual but it is scary. Palantir is stockpiling personal data that can easily be used to prevent equal access, imprison, deport or kill disabled people.
The president can not undo state laws via executive orders but tech is continuously lobbying and bribing power so that the law serves them not us. Narratives of competition of the US vs China help funnel money to Thiel, Andreessen and Schmidt's violent agendas www.reuters.com/world/trump-...
Trailer for my new video: The 7 Trillion Dollar Seance. It's on how AI culture functions like historical spiritualism using our collective grief and fear to shape beliefs that enable greater extraction, violence and the concentration of power. asapjournal.com/node/seance-...
