Yall the gasp that went up when we showed this snipped in a room full of people already mad about their utility corporation. We talked about how there is an entire belief system that makes this type of policy and speech socially acceptable and how our task is to drive this out root and branch.
Extreme heat kills and our right wing media will turn it into a narrative that abandons people. Here's an example: note that 700 people died in 2 years and the outlet solely stated drug use is the leading cause -- not the heat itself!! (An organizer here said many of these folks were homeless.)
I was told repeatedly that was not a priority, and that I should focus on creating market demand for some widget or another. Kinder people would suggest I join a startup selling LED lamps in Africa. This prediction book was also handed out in a different seminar or guest lecture that same year.
Cleaning out my bookshelves today and found this (2015). I must have gotten it at a seminar in grad school, it had a DC based fellowship brochure inside. What a difference a decade makes.
As the authors of this study note themselves, this is not a surprise!! But i'm glad that they did the work to put some numbers to this with what is likely to be the last data set we get making this inference possible for quite awhile.

Everyone in Boston loathes this one specific traffic circle, right? I have to believe this is the sort of thing i can walk into a Dunkin and immediately make 5 new friends over our hatred of anywhere in the city.

This one comes from a think tank called the Federation of American Scientists, where they name that the current model of private ownership creates the wrong incentives for private corporations - if we want more clean energy, we have to have a public, not for profit grid.
A lot of interesting and good writing about electricity policy right now that includes public power as a serious option. I liked this policy proposal from Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator that suggests utility regulators should crank the ROE down so low that IOUs prefer to sell back to the public.
The EIA put out its most recent data about energy affordability, and an eye popping 33% of all Americans struggle to pay their energy bills. Up from 27% four year ago.
