Scientist watching the world burn from Tahoe. PhD in neuro stuff from Cal. NIH alum. Retired I guess. Have MS and at war with my brain in general. Weather obsessed. A goblin. Creators show me your creations! Alt text if possible plz #WxSky #FireWx
Snow flower growing in damp pine needles- similar and different. Anything green is something else. No chlorophyll. But, as above, what is it? Pops up after snowmelts in damp detritus and then disappears for the rest of the year.
Well, that's not a great look for the country. The PNW looks to be contending with lightning strike fire starts as well; note that it was a lightning storm that set off the complex of fires plaguing the NE and Canada, which is causing the AQI to go to hell,
Shiny wonderful things (a pyritized ammonite pendent with well-defined chambers, a white opal inlay silver ring, & this badass silver necklace that I need to wear to do justice -when less goblinish) from @peculiarityshop.bsky.social !!!
❤️ We're out here, scribbling with watercolor pencils to fill in your art zines in a desperate and appreciated boost to staying sane in a world that refuses to let us.
oh oh oh I just received the most amazing package from @peculiarityshop.bsky.social Briefest snap of one thing as I rearrange jewelry and deal with life but holy SHIT, look at the bracelets - the furthest up one in this case. Where was this my entire frikken life? Other amazing things as well...
Oh, awesomeness! Thx for letting me know! Because I definitely could not stab anyone with this 🫠
not for me to enter anything. just want to help, pass it along and hoping for the best.
Quick, let's all go screenshot our local AQI's so we can compare back tomorrow for funsies (environmental despair.) Shots below: Left - Wunderground (can be found under Air Quality). Right - WatchDuty with AQI layer turned on. Other sources out there too - suggestions?
Not such a great shot, but magpie sitting on a concrete eagle with a broken off beak so it looks more like a falcon. A few geese watch from below.
Good thing this won't runoff into delicate wildlands and waters. But even it it did, it's ✨Natural✨! Like raw milk! And no vaccines! And having zero scientific knowledge! And ✨Cyanide!✨! I bet it has zero chemicals because MAHA Kelley wouldn't tolerate such abominations.
Great, MAHA's trying to fuck the lake. Oh, and what is FireHawk "natural" pesticide? It's super selective in that it only kills literally everything you put it on (see next post). Not cheering for glycophosphate, but this MAHA shzt thinks she knows better than decades of research because ✨Nature✨
Since we're only a bit more than a week out from the 'blow shit up and traumatize everyone's pets' holiday, I'd like to take a moment to share a word or two with the Western US about fireworks: Don't.
Categories on the main landing page of my pharmacy now include GLP-1 support. Which, awesome no issues with the drug or those it is helping at all. But, its own category? Next to 'Manage Prescriptions' for all drugs? We're weird creatures. 'Hormones' oddly missing. Weird and terrible.
@peculiarityshop.bsky.social Some of the amazing things I've picked up here. More details in alts. I am so freaking obsessed with the seraphinite ring! And the craftsmanship on all of these pieces is mind-blowing. 😳
So here's what that looks like. (Also, MODIS and VIIRs and a lot more for fellow wx nerds. Scooper flights, wind, etc.) Anyways, it's non-profit and I'm just a person who lives in fire territory and is glad for and impressed by the service! My continual thanks to the many dedicated volunteers.
@peculiarityshop.bsky.social I was not very familiar with seraphinite and thought a video would show its depth and dynamism better than stills. It still doesn't do it justice! (my videography skills leave much to be desired 😅)
Sweet. I jerry-rigged a belt-clip outer phone case that didn't fit my phone using the kit I bought to make my glasses stay on. Sucked for glasses (silicon will rip out hair - I have some bangs now lol) but turned out to be perfect for this.
The pollen situation in Tahoe right now. It's the pines responsible for painting the town yellow. They all seem to release at once, and prodigiously at that. (note that the pollen on the ground is so thick that there are visible tire tracks in it.)
Thank you @peculiarityshop.bsky.social Cat pin! There's no way to show all of the sparkle on this without a video, but I hope this captures some of the sleek feline charisma of its subject 😻 Oh and that shadow? It's coming to knock all your stuff off the table and chat with the ghosts at midnight.
@peculiarityshop.bsky.social Thank you for the whistle!! Also, in a weird coincidence, where I live the dominant tree is the sugarcane pine which has cones that look like pic shown on the right (image credit NPS, *sobs*) I'm going to pretend that this was deliberate 🤭
The girls (cats) are beginning to tolerate each other! Territory is slowly merging, they can hang out in the same room indefinitely...progress! (the upside down goofball on the right is Stormy, the sprawled tortie on the left is Lightning)
Porcupine and not hedgehog quill but we have the latter where I live and seeing a dog with a face bristling in quills does happen. The fact the spikey bois can almost launch their otherwise well-anchored quills in defense amazes me.
The forest didn't used to look quite like this, full of bleached skeletal dead trees. There are a lot of factors at play (borer beetles for instance) but the dry dead trees contribute to the flammability of the mountain forests.
Red flag warning (high risk of fires due to land/fuel dryness and low relative humidity, plus strong gusting winds) around the junction of CA, OR, and NV. May be some starts in NV already. Be safe all, and keep an eye on those barbecues! Or maybe don't light things at all. Only gonna get worse.
So just got back from seeing this & it was a great time! First, it's hilarious and the performers are amazing. Also, it had some of the most interesting and innovative stagecraft I've seen, especially on a touring show. 'How TF did they do that with the DeLorean?' was a topic discussed driving home.
