Did y'all know there are three species of zebra? I found this out a couple weeks ago and it's been continuously pressing me Cuz you'd think "How different can zebras be from one another" PRETTY DIFFERENT AS IT TURNS OUT. Look at these guys and you'll be like "They're not that diff-hold up"

Hartmann's Mountain Zebra - a subspecies of Mountain Zebra. These guys are distinguishable from other zebra due to having a dewlap: a flap of skin under their neck which hangs loosely. There is a second subspecies of these guys known as the Cape Mountain Zebra. Both subspecies are native to south west Africa, particularly Namibia and South Afirca

Grevi's Zebra - the only zebra species with no identified subspecies. These guys are distinguished by their more mule/ass like appearance relative to other zebras, who are more horse like (note the ears and head are a bit larger in these guys than other zebra). They are found primarily in Kenya with small populations in Ethiopia.

This is either Chapmann's Zebra or Burchell's Zebra - two subspecies of the Plains Zebra. These guys are identified by having striping that encircles their belly, where other zebra have white bellies, and in these two subspecies specifically, the presence of extra, more faded stripes interspersed with their main stripes.

Plains Zebra have seven total subspecies, the Maneless Zebra (which has a very short mane like it really throws you how short it is), Grant's Zebra, Crawshay's Zebra, the aforementioned Burchell's and Chapmann's Zebra, and the Selous' Zebra. Their range extends across numerous countries, including Namibia, South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Zambia

The Quagga was a subspecies of Plains Zebra that was driven to extinction by humans, with the last living individual dying in the 1880's. Despite this they ended up being the scientific name for the species - the Plains Zebra is named Equus Quagga. The scientific name for the entire clade of zebras is Hippotigris (Horse Tiger)

I was today years old when I discovered that pheasants are not native to the UK 31 years and they always felt like a quintissentially british animal to me, we have paintings of them in bars lmao, what do you mean they got imported from south asia as game I now care much more deeply about pheasants

Common Pheasants are also known as Ring-Necked Pheasants due to the white band on the males that seperates the plumage between their heads and bodies, and the Blue-Headed Pheasant, again due to the males distinctly blue heads.

Their native range was originally across Asia, with populations in China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other nations, reaching as far west as Azerbaijan and south western Russia. They have been introduced as game fowl to a huge number of european countries, the United States, Canada, Morroco, Turkey, New Zealand and in very small pockets of Australia.
