I couldn't sleep last night and I found myself thinking about Andor (duh) and I realized:
One of my favorite things about this show is that it's bucking recent tradition in that its villains are not morally grey characters. Syril clearly grew up in an emotionally abusive home. but that's not why he's the way he is. Dedra takes pleasure in punishment, and there's no indication that it's revenge for something that happened in her life. The Empire tortures and kills at will just to get and retain power. It's fascism for fascism's sake and every last one of them does it because it makes them feel good.
The grey morality is saved for the heroes, because when you live in a world where existing incorrectly can get you killed, sometimes you have to make the bad choice to survive.
And it's just so brilliantly real.
