Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says police should focus on violent crimes, not free speech, in response to a recent Edmonton Police Service video encouraging Albertans to report hate.
The 18-second video posted on July 31 by EPS showed a number of comments saying things like
"Canada needs F- deportation now," "bad drivers are always - ppl" and "we are letting — take over and if you say anything you're going 2 jail." The video ended by saying "hate has no home here" and encouraged Albertans to report any hate they see to EPS.

Hello from the decidedly NOT sunny Alberta Capital Region. (Pic is from a week ago, but weather exactly the same today, lol.)

The practice of sterilization arose out of the
eugenics movement and has a long, often
hidden history in Canada. Sterilization legislation
in Alberta (1928-72) and British Columbia
(1933-73) attempted to limit the reproduction of "unfit" persons, and increasingly targeted Indigenous women. Coerced sterilization of
Indigenous women took place both within and outside existing legislation, and in federally operated Indian hospitals. The practice has
continued into the 21st century. Approximately
100 Indigenous women have alleged that they were pressured to consent to sterilization
between the 1970s and 2018, often while in the vulnerable state of pregnancy or childbirth.

We are outraged by hateful and illegal graffiti placed outside a Muslim school and Muslim daycare in Edmonton, including messages urging people to
"Rise Against Islam."
Seeing words of hate directed at a place where children learn and grow is deeply disturbing. No parent should have to explain to their child why their school has become the target of hatred.
At a time when Muslims across Canada continue to face threats, harassment, and acts of violence, such incidents contribute to a climate of fear and intimidation that no child, parent, or educator should ever have to endure. Only a few weeks ago, not too far away from where this graffiti was placed, a Muslim man was beaten senseless because of Islamophobia in front of his family.

We stand in solidarity with the students, families, staff, and broader community affected by this hateful act. Every child deserves to feel safe at school, regardless of their faith.
We are in touch with Edmonton Police, and we encourage law enforcement to investigate this incident fully and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
We also call on political leaders at every level to speak out clearly and unequivocally against Islamophobia.
We need action to stand against Islamophobia in Alberta.
