As close as I care to get to a bison, this large male was grazing by Fairy Falls trail, leaving just enough room to scoot by on the far side of the trail. At Yellowstone NP.

I had doubts about planting lantana, it's non-native. But it draws all sorts of pollinators to the garden, from hummingbirds to this Western Tiger Swallowtail. And it does well in our dry, hot California summers.

Found on my hike in the Sierra Nevada north of Truckee. The snow plant (Sarcodes sanguinea) gets its nutrients from fungi connected to conifer trees, not from photosynthesis. I found numerous plants this morning between 6500' and 7000'.

Every time I feel infuriated, powerless, and hopeless, I do two things. First, I read something hopeful that clarifies our struggles and highlights strategies, and second, I go out into nature and meditate on how it cleanses, destroys, and heals.

If you've never visited Badwater Basin in Death Valley NP, it's a fascinating place. Once a lake, as the climate warmed and became more arid, the water evaporated, leaving behind concentrations of minerals and salts.
