one of the most important differences between the SDP and most other SPA chapters nationwide was the absence of any major faction fights in Wisconsin. Whereas factionalism often made it difficult to recruit or retain workers elsewhere in the United States, the Wisconsin SDP's cohesion reflected members' strong focus on outward-facing work as well as the confidence (and responsi-bilities) derived from the party's ongoing electoral wins and union leadership. As Berger noted, "Doctrinairism and dogmatism lead to splits and to the formation of political sects. But when people are constantly absorbed in doing things, and in preparing for still greater things, the petty jealousies and small causes for strife and dissension disappear." Berger also felt that one of the reasons Wisconsin's movement maintained such a high degree of unity and purpose was that it had so few middle-class members, with their tendencies toward excessively theoretical debates.

The Trinity Alps are an amazing mountain range with incredible flora and fauna and also some really pretty mountains, 10/10 would recommend.

Ok in all seriousness this article covers some pretty egregious behavior by waymo I hadn't heard about elsewhere

In January, NHTSA opened an investigation after a Waymo vehicle struck a child near an elementary school in California, causing minor injuries.

In March, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a preliminary report on its investigation into multiple instances of Waymo vehicles passing stopped San Antonio ISD school buses in violation of state law. It found that on at least one occasion, a human remote assistance agent directed the robotaxi to pass a bus while students were loading.

This gets so much at my beef with these companies. They want to get special treatment to do stuff that circumvents all kinds of regulations (traffic laws, labor laws, privacy laws, etc.) and it's all for some distant payoff that will definitely happen, we just gotta trust them

I really like this part that digs into how a lot of unsafe behavior exists not because we can't be safe, but because providing competitive service requires skirting safety (see: Amazon delivery vans)

In San Francisco, the vehicles often pull into bike lanes to pick up and drop off passengers — because that’s what they’re programmed to do, according to advocates who’ve asked the company for an explanation.

Waymo has told advocates that expecting it to respect bike lanes is “too high a bar” because customers expect to be dropped off in them, said Christopher White, executive director of the San Francisco Bike Coalition.

“People always point out that unlike human driven cars, the AVs stop at lights and obey the speed limit. However, they are really only as good and effective and safe as they are programmed to be,” White said. “Waymos pull over into bike lanes all the time for pickups and drop-offs and that’s neither legal nor safe but the companies say that is a normal practice and that’s what customers expect.”

One thing that has often been left out of conversations around housing affordability in Austin is the mass influx and subsequent exodus of people to and from the city from roughly 2020-2023. This study has the first real effort to address that, and it looks promising!
