Well, this is an unfortunate plot twist in my move to Chicago, but you all deserve to hear it.

On Monday, I was laid off from my game development job.

I know. It just stings because as a slot machine developer, I was always in one of the more safe, corporate subcategories of the games industry, kinda shielded from the ups and downs of the more volatile sectors like mobile and console gaming. But slot gaming isn't immune.

Hannibal Lecter in the book has some weird ideas about trans people. What tree are you?

"Let's see... our hypothesis is we're looking for a male who will test differently
from the way a true transsexual would test. All right--- on House-Tree-Person, look for
someone who didn't draw the female figure first. Male transsexuals almost always draw
the female first and, typically, they pay a lot of attention to adornments on the females
they draw. Their male figures are simple stereotypes--- there are some notable exceptions
where they draw Mr. America--- but not much in between.
"Look for a house drawing without the rosy-future embellishments--- no baby
carriage outside, no curtains, no flowers in the yard.
"You get two kinds of trees with real transsexuals--- flowing, copious willows and
castration themes. The trees that are cut off by the edge of the drawing or the edge of the
paper, the castration images, are full of life in the drawings of true transsexuals.
Flowering and fruitful stumps. That's an important distinction. They're very unlike the
frightened, dead, mutilated trees you see in drawings by people with mental disturbances.
That's a good one--- Billy's tree will be frightful. Am I going too fast?"

TIL, there is a 19th century steampunk version of Frankenstein called Frank-in-Steam.

fifteen stage productions adapted Frankenstein. The title of one 1824 production—Frank-in-Steam; or, The Modern Promise to Pay—parodies the full title of Shelley’s novel; at the time, steam power was as potent an icon of modern industrial technology as were the automated looms that Luddites raged against from 1811 to 1817, their campaigns peaking from the summer of 1816 to that of 1817, precisely when Shelley was writing her novel (O’Flinn 1986, 196). In Frank-in-Steam, the play’s protagonist, a student in debt, learns of the death of his antagonist, a bailiff named Mr. Snatch, and cannot resist the opportunity to reanimate the corpse—rather unwisely, since the bailiff remains, in his undead state, as bent on collecting the student’s debt as he was in life. Ultimately, the student kills his monstrous progeny by pushing Snatch into a steamboat’s boiler (Forry 1990, 186). This play also parodies Peake’s Presumption, not only by capitalizing on the growing popularity of stagings of Frankenstein but also in one important detail—by not staging but instead narrating its climactic steam-boiler murder scene, thereby denying the audience a technical spectacle that Presumption had led it to expect of these stagings.

The movies don't quite catch just how misogynistic Bond really is. It's way worse when you can hear his inner dialogue. From "Casino Royale".

Bond sat at the window and gathered his thoughts. Nothing that Mathis had told him was reassuring. He was completely blown and under really professional surveillance. An attempt might be made to put him away before he had a chance to pit himself against Le Chiffre at the tables. The Russians had no stupid prejudices about murder. And then there was this pest of a girl. He sighed. Women were for recreation. On a job, they got in the way and fogged things up with sex and hurt feelings and all the emotional baggage they carried around. One had to look out for them and take care of them.
