On a happier note, I found my photo of the original Orion rocket test launch (Or1on / ETF-1)! Kennedy Space Center is a great museum (see alt text). Alas my photo with Astronaut Jerry Linenger did not survive the car crash that killed my phone & laptop a few years later. But he's a true treasure 🫶

The general public viewing area at Kennedy Space Center at the moment of the Orion ETF-1 launch. It's general admission so you have to check in at zero-dark-stupid-hours to the a shuttle from the parking to KSC, queue for a wristband in 85% humidity in the dark and chill wind (bring a windbreaker or light jacket that can deal with serious dew and occasiona rain), head over to the viewing area to sfake tour claim (bring a chair, or at least a coccyx relief cushion from the blacher seats), chat with your fellow peasants for a few hours, and then hope the weather holds so you don't have to do all that again lol.
Everyone starts to stand up as the countdown near T-minus-30 seconds, so the disabled have to hold your phone over your head and hope the photo's good.
In the foreground, silhouetted by the rocket's glare, there are some palm trees and a small oak tree and a lot of men in baseball caps with very serious camera lenses. Across the flat water of the Cochrane Cove, there is a giant ball of white light from blastoff and a white tail where the rocket has already passed because it's a lot faster than you think from a couple nautical miles away.

If you really really need to see a launch to die happy, save up for a daytime launch ticket or schmooze your eay into the VIP seating. Otherwise, just sleep in so you'll have the energy for an amazing day at the KSC complex of museums! Watch online, then time your arrival for the NASA Meet & Greet when museums open.

The Atlantis exhibit made this Marine combat veteran cry plentiful tears of joy in public and I still want a second viewing!

If you have base access, Patrick AFB has a dock near the chowhall with a beach full of horseshoe crabs and the space-a is worthwhile - civilians should stay in Port Canaveral to avoid disappointment with traffic while enjoying the seafood and the Wizard of Oz Museum.

"Free" to a good home, my arse! His Magnificence Douglas, rescued from a backyard breeder, annexed my home in 2022. Recently his bladder needed hospitalization (symptoms seen early = no permanent damage yay) He's worth it, yet his $4000 bill means I won't see my family in Germany for a 7th year.

His Magnificence the Sultan Douglas, a shorthair choco-seal point Siamese, has flopped on his side upon the floor (parquet wooden tiles of birch and pine, very common in 1960s rental housing in Canada) after he arrived home today with some very, very good drugs for his recovery from a bladder emergency. His limb are splayed and head raisee as watches his last braincell flicker briefly before he falls asleep. Thereafter he was whisked away to his royal tent (box with a piece of old bedsheet draped over top) from which Douglas rules all mere humans in a manner which reminds his human of a particular Ayuubid ruler 😽🫶

I collect medieval art of Kogge ships & this one fits the paradigm! I suspect it's later than the 12-13th.c. ones I'm desperate to collect for my project (monograph forthcoming some year when my day job & disabled cat allow lol). But I'd appreciate more info about this & an imahe file if poss pls?

Can any #ship or #transport fans please #identify the manufacturer of this #UK donated ferry circa 1965 or 1970? It operated on the Euphrates north of the city of al-Hit (Anbar, #Iraq). It was called "Blondie" & the operator recalled the British named it but not why (photo (c) Dr H. al-Oubeidi)

The UK donated this ferry to help the villages along the Euphrates north of al-Hit, Anbar province, Iraq. It appears to be made of two pontoons, which appear rusted in this photo from 1965 or 1970, taken from its port side, with a wooden car deck laid across the pontoons and two operator's cabins, one fore and one aft. A square rusted frame about 15ft/3m high surmounts the deck, possiblt meant to hold a shade-awning which no longer existed by the time of this photo. Two jeep-type vehicles, possibly 1960s Range Rovers, are already aboard whilst a group of passengers stand near the fore cabin (likely paying their fares). Photo (c) Dr. Hassan al-Oubeidi

A slightly askew view of Bridge 21 (1930) an interesting example of a vettical-lifting bridge whereupon the operator "rides" the truss in their conductor's cabin (centre). The mechanism lofts 130ft / 37m in about 90 seconds. Behind the tree were multiple work crews, rushing to beat the early melt!

Straddling the ice shards melting into the canal, Bridge 21 is a lifting bridge made of steel trusses. The two asymmetrical vertical trusses have their mechanisms at their tops, while the horizontal truss is the usual 1920-1940 crescent-lile shape but with a small conductor's cabin in the centre, whence the workers control the mechanism. It is painted a light gray, almost matching the foggy weather. At left is a cluster of tall evergreen bushes - otherwise everything is late Winter monochrome, even the black reflections between the white melting ice.

The ALGOMA BUFFALO at her winter mooring in the Welland Canal, with bloody stupid "antiterrorism" fencing that we all hate. The land and water (and view) are Commons since 1829 so the Crown should not be allowing the Seaway's ill-conceived security rules to prevent the people from accessing our Commons! The final few pieces of the SS CUYAHOGA (1938) in the scrapyard on the eastern side of the Welland Canal at Lake Erie. For a lot of Great Lakes shipwatchers she was a fond sight, but her fire damage was too extensive to retire her as a museum ship. 2023 article: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

A very foggy view of the wrecker's drydock and maritime scrapyard on the eastern side, taken from the western side at 20x zoom using the canalside railing for a tripod. Not bad for a phone! Dismantling began in January and the fog may veil the final few pieces of the MV CUYAHOGA, the eldest ship consistently sailing the Great Lakes until her 2023 fire underway.
