The Lyon on-ramp crosses the Bronson off-ramp and is sure to result in collisions once it reopens.

For historical context, there used to be am Eastbound on-ramp at Bronson and Westbound off-ramp at Kent that were closed because they were too close to other access points and causing issues.

Google Maps has the Lyon Street 417 on-ramp opening tomorrow, but it won't actually open until the end of the month. Gonna be lots of confused drivers. They should keep this ramp closed for good.

The point is to get more homes built, and they even provide some (probably made up) numbers on how many homes will result from these projects. The wastewater projects provide 54% of the homes with just 8% of the funding, while arterial roads provide just 22% of the homes and use 40% of the funding.

And here's where the city plans to spend the $478 million from the Feds and province: Suburban arterial roads, intersections, and a parking lot make up 54%. A rec center for Riverside South, 38%. And a couple sewer projects, 8%.

Even if developers just pocket the money, this should at least incentivize them to finally build some of the 69,000 housing units already approved. They only have until March 2030 for occupancy or they don't qualify for the reduction. The $692 million project list leaves a lot to be desired though.

This occupancy by 2030 requirement will be interesting. Any of the dozens of already-approved high rise developments which have not started construction will have to start right away to get the reduction. e.g. the Greyhound station redevelopment could save over $15 million, IF they build in time.

And Range Rovers are actually kinda small compared to full sized American SUVs.

The city also had an artist paint a bunch of murals on the street but didn't even bother patching it up first.

Don't forget to also block the bike lane if there is one!

This street doesn't exactly have greenspace to spare... What we SHOULD be doing is making MORE space for trees and gardens, not less. Why do we let engineers design our streets?

Here's that proposal as a GIF. Goodbye greenspace! Thankfully that's not what they eventually went with. Would have been a big shocker for people since there was no consultation on this! The current design is still widening the sidewalk by removing 0.3m from the gardens though.

So I'm super not happy with the design for the Percy Street renewal, but it was actually almost even worse. The project manager told me they had planned on moving the sidewalk to the other side of the utility poles... Here's the email and a mock-up of what I think that would have looked like. 🫪

I see you guys at the northern end of Percy Street, which only has southbound bike lanes. This street should have two way bike traffic. Look how well it links into the Crosstown Bikeway network! Why is this not a thing anyone is working on?

Enbridge has had this sidewalk ripped up for months, venting stinky gas from a broken gas main. I guess they're tired of getting smell-of-gas calls from every passerby because they've come to solve the the problem... by adding taller vent pipes.

I think Rob is going to quickly regret taking credit for this wonderful work by the city. They've come and slopped asphalt into all the landscaped bulbouts all down the street. ↙️ Before and After ↘️

Counterpoint: these schools are also all immediately adjacent to local streets that could easily be blocked off and turned into the school streets.

Through an FOI request, I got a copy of the unreleased Ottawa Speed Zone Policy Update (page 158). Lots to read through! sjamieit.github.io/files/A20260... They also included the existing 2009 Speed Zoning Policy, and it has some... interesting mocking and dismissal of complaints about speeding.

The plans for Percy Street renewal are up on MERX for bidding. The already finalized plans include no new traffic calming measures, no lane narrowing, no modal filter, a decrease in greenspace... but the sidewalks are being widened! ...into people's gardens. sjamieit.github.io/files/percy....
