Unusual 80s & 90s toys. Usual Transformers of all eras. Sharing pictures of my ridiculously huge toy collection & thoughts from my ridiculously tiny brain. Relive your childhood through the eyes of someone who never really left his…
Battle Beasts Diving Duckbill! Look at his little snorkel!!! What’s not little is his oddly gigantic left hand (which he’s tired of jokes about. The first such incident occurred in 1956…). Not sure why it is so enormous compared to the right but I’m sure it helps him swim. His weapon is super cool
Definitely an underrated castle. Highly recommend the Battle Station add-on, it make a great back door
Some right bargains to be had on eBay at the moment. Does £90,000 for an incomplete Centurions Doc Terror tickle your fancy? Or maybe £49,000 for a yellowed Ghostbusters Wolfman is more your speed? (Some fuckery going on with that seller)
Battle Beasts Shadow Warriors / Laser Beasts Brain Mouse! I love his mouse-shaped blaster (wonder if he calls it Pinky?). His cheesy armour and crushing claw make him really stand out and he’s one of the best for showing off the element crystal gimmick of the Laser Beasts (this one is clearly water)
Battle Beasts Deer Stalker! This deadly deer is ready to rule the rut! He’s dripping in weapons with a honking great drill hand, some kind of laser cannon on his shoulder, hip-mounted missile launchers and a freakin’ bat’leth. Cool shades too 😎
The sun goes down over my lovely evening walk route both literally and figuratively. Soon this field will be newbuild houses and the hares and poppies replaced by pricks with Teslas. Almost all my local farmland has been built on in the past few years. Very sad. Goodbye view x
Battle Beasts Triple Threat Snake! Makes King Hiss look like a commoner! Shoulder cannons, interesting anatomy and a badass axe
Can I offer you a piece of Pez from a vintage Nermal dispenser in this trying time?
Battle Beasts Blitzkrieg Bat! Presumably uses his robotic eye to help him hunt down prey at night, his wicked hook hand and axe to dispatch them, and his German accent to gloat about it afterwards. Looks like he his missiles on his crotch which is… a place to keep them alright
Battle Beasts War Weasel! The only thing cooler than this mighty mustelid's name is his look - gas mask AND gun arm! Whatever war he's going to you can bet it'll be a dirty one. I don't think you'd ever guess that he was supposed to be a weasel but he’s so cool you don't care #vintagetoytursday
It’s a shame his (still very cool) Toy Story That Time Forgot upgrade wasn’t more Dino Rider-y. Interesting that they both add mechanical upgrades to the arms (the TSTTF version is substantially beefier though)
Stop the Planet of the Apes - I want to get off! 🎶 Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius! Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius! Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius! Oooooooo, Doctor Zaius! 🎶
Battle Beasts Ossified Orangutan! One of the Borg-iest beasts with a cool cyborg claw arm. GREAT name! Love the spear too
Coelophysis Swarm! I’ve built up enough Coelophysis to recreate the Kenner Collector’s card scene. Dream come true! I’m tempted to try to do all of the cards (already done Dimetrodon) though some might be trickier than others. We shall see…
Jurassic Park Coelophysis! This excellent set has 2 features that Kenner would sadly not repeat - being a 2-pack of smaller dinosaurs (GREAT idea, crazy they never did it again) & bendy wire constrictor bodies that gave them great posability (their paint rubbing off easily might’ve killed that idea)
Battle Beasts Shadow Warriors / Laser Beasts Shool! A wicked-looking centipede with a cool blaster. Love how his arms look like OG centipedes. As ever with the Laser Beasts I wonder what his Hasbro name might be (“Shool” is is the Takara name, no Hasbro name has ever surfaced). Centurion Centipede?
Tempo Talking Stories Robo Machine Featuring Challenge of the Gobots book & cassette packs! Similar in format to the Transformers Ladybird books/tapes. The art/stories aren’t as good though they use largely the same voice cast (Peter Marinker et al) with the addition of an excellent lady as Crasher
More from my lil library! This lot is mostly annuals (and mostly Transformers at that) with some fun activity books and the all-important Transformers Universe trade paperback (THE sacred text)
Tempo Thundercats Gift Box! 4 fabulous adventure story books! 4 stories with music *and* sound effects on a long play cassette! Entertainment for home *OR* in the car! Was this better than the iPads kids today have? Absolutely fucking not! But they were entertaining enough & we cherished them
Some more good reading! A nice selection of 1980s toy property tie-in books. Stickers, puzzles, albums etc. It’s easy to forget how boring childhood could be sometimes and these definitely helped pass the time
Kinder “Transformers” train! This one hails from the 1990s though is oddly more primitive than the 80s ones with a simple transformation & the face & body detailing provided by stickers. The whole thing is *very* reminiscent of the Gobot Loco to the point it feels like a knock-off of him
Tempo Talking Stories Thundercats Exodus book & recording set! Read the book! Listen to the stories! For entertainment at home *and* in the car! As a kid I got a kick out of this release using the actual voice actors from the cartoon as it made it feel a bit more special than standard story tapes
I’m reminded what a pretty set the Transformers Ladybird books make. This is the full set including the very rare frieze (there are lots of very slight cover/price variations for completely insane completists). Hard to emphasise how foundational these book & their readalong tapes were for UK kids
Just had a close encounter with a ring ouzel behind my greenhouse. I’d have been less surprised if it has been an alien. Last time I checked I wasn’t on a mountain or moorland. Wasn’t remotely bothered by me, two feet away at one point. Magical! @rspb.bsky.social @chrisgpackham.bsky.social
I was in Loughborough today & popped into see my pal Andy at his shop Winged Ape (sells all sorts of retro toys, clothes, records & antiques). Shop is looking rather lush in its bigger & brighter new home with a great selection of toys (some STONKING Transformers & Gobots). Go-real-a bargain in! 🦍🪽
The scared texts! Didn’t buy anything as I’ve got them all a dozen times over but it was nice to see them in a charity shop as it’s been a while (used to be that EVERY charity shop would have at least one 80s character Ladybird book)
2/2 were gorgeous toys & very well made. They were also similar to Ulysses 31 in that they did much better business in continental Europe. Oh and now the Inspector Gadget theme tune is stuck in your head, isn’t it? You’re welcome.
