An excerpt from Pinot Mort, a Vinophile Mystery.

“Is she dead?” asked the boy.
“I’m afraid so,” Jay answered. The body’s deathly pallor and frozen expression, evident even through a purple tint, gave sufficient evidence to make the call. The dead girl had long dark hair, trailing into the burgundy pool like seaweed. There were no signs of bloating or decomposition so far. She seemed to have a shocked expression on her face.
“She looks surprised,” he said.
“Have some respect!” Marissa snapped. She was their co-opted tour guide from the winery, who at first had staggered back, away from the body, eyes wide and staring. She seemed to have regained some poise.
“All right, everyone, move back.” She herded him and the rest of the group away from the grim spectacle.
Jay surveyed the circular stone cellar, taking in the hundreds of two-toned oak barrels arranged in rings around them, thinking the odds of him crashing into the dead girl’s barrel were small. He wondered how many of the other wine barrels in the cellar might hide similar secrets. A shiver ran down his spine.

Julie blinked in the sudden sunlight.
“Let me go, you can’t get away with this.” She spoke in a high-pitched, raspy voice, hoarse from screaming.
“Turn around and put your hands together behind your back,” Wallace commanded.
“And if I don’t?” she said.
Wallace saw her pupils grow large as she focused on the knife.
“I’d like for you to stay alive, but it doesn’t have to be in one piece,” he replied. He flourished the knife in a complex pattern, ending disturbingly close to Julie’s eye. She rolled awkwardly over in the confined space. Wallace zip-tied her wrists together.
“OK, on your back,” he said, pulling on her shoulder. Julie rolled back towards Wallace.
“I need a bathroom and some water,” she said. Wallace ignored her statement. She watched as he cut a piece off the wide roll of masking tape. His long knife went through it like butter. “This won’t solve anything. What do you hope to gain?”
“I’m protecting Tina’s reputation. Men who destroy it are damned to hell, and I will be the tool of damnation,” he said. He pressed the tape firmly across her mouth, ending the conversation. She cringed as he leaned over her. In spite of his pronouncements about the futility of noise, Wallace was taking no chances that someone on a neighbouring farm might be alarmed by Julie’s shouts, once he pulled her out of the car.

A text box containing the following: The falling tree crashed down in a fountain of flames, peppering the convoy with embers like burning rice at Satan’s wedding and completely blocking the road. Terry was lost from sight. His wife Susan got out of the car, screaming, “Terry! Terry!”
Jay popped the frunk, leapt out and ran to the front of his truck to grab a fire extinguisher stored in the space under the hood.
“Somebody help him,” Susan yelled.
Jay ran up to the burning tree and sprayed it with the extinguisher. Waves of heat washed against his left side, coming from the burning woods.
“I’m alright, I’m alright, I’m here Susan,” Terry called from the other side.
“Thank God,” Susan said, peering through the smoke.
“We’ve got to move this tree,” Jay shouted.
The older man from the pickup truck jogged up.
“I’ve got it,” he barked. “Back in the car, we’re moving,” he added in a loud voice directed at Susan, then he dove into the front seat of the sedan. Susan was barely in the vehicle when he started driving it forward, butting into the fallen tree with the front bumper and pushing it out of the way, branches scraping along the vehicle’s side. With the tree shoved aside, they could see Terry beyond it, waving. Susan got out and they rushed together, flinging themselves into an embrace. The older man threw open the driver’s door, yelling, “Get in, get in! We have to get out of here.”
