The Green Cross Code approach seems outdated, right? All that victim-blaming and putting the responsibility for road safety onto primary school children, when it should be on drivers... But check out the Government's latest iteration, part of its THINK! campaign. www.think.gov.uk/campaign/saf...
We need to stop blaming children for bad driving, hostile roads and too-big cars. Think they deserve #StreetsForKids ? 👉 Hit follow. Share. Like. #SolveTheSchoolRun #LondonParents #SafeStreets #GrassrootsMovement #SafeStreets
🔹But most of all, a child under 10 is 3x more likely to be killed if hit by an SUV than by a normal car.
🔹They are not suited to London life. We don't have the space.
Car manufacturers are profiting massively from producing these more expensive, oversized vehicles.
This insanely out-of-touch government advice for kids on how to cross the road safely would be laughable if it weren't for the 443 children injured on London's roads each year.
This 1980s government road safety poster was designed to terrify children into vigilance when when crossing the road. It seems outdated, and yet the responsibility for road safety is still put onto pedestrians, cyclists - and children. Let's stop victim-blaming. Follow us for a better way.
The recent @smartphonefreechildhood UK success is a massive win for kids' freedom. But when the u-16 social media ban arrives next spring - how will our kids spend that new-found freedom... when car dominance of our streets makes it unsafe for them go outside independently? #carfreechildhood
"This is a market failure. Without clear standards to limit car size and encourage right-sizing, carspreading will continue unchecked, and cities will keep paying the price.”
New data analysis produced in collaboration with @cleancitiescampaign.org shows this status quo is a "lose-lose". Krajinska continues: "Councils are forced to reshape streets around larger vehicles, sacrificing parking capacity, public space and safety in the process."
"Car manufacturers have spent decades pushing large expensive cars at the expense of smaller models. After 25 years of relentless growth, our streets are dominated by oversized SUVs that cities simply weren’t designed for." Anna Krajinska of @transportenvironment.org
That time when @bikebusworld.bsky.social founder, Sam Balto, came to south London and led the school-run-on-wheels in the most joyful fashion. Like this idea? Follow us to find out more! #bikebus #safeschoolrun #streetsforkids #coachbalto
Does this unexpectedly poignant scene from the BBC's Amandaland show attitudes towards dangerous driving are changing? #amandaland #dangerousdriving #roadsafety
Campaigning did it: under-16s #socialmedia ban is now banned. But guess what else is addictive to children... Freedom! Freedom to muck about with pals in the street, to walk or cycle independently to and from school. But first we need safer roads. Help us make change happen, too: share this.
Post school drop-off trip to the vet sorted... oh, hang on... Dear local councils - please consider cargo bikes when putting up bollards and barriers. Many a car-free school-run route is cut off by a well-meaning barrier :/
Do you agree? A child-friendly kerbside, without large cars dangerously blocking sightlines and hogging space, is key to our campaign for #streetsforkids Councillors pledged, you voted, now it's time for action. Help us to hold our councils to account! Share and tag your local councillors!
What do you experience at school drop-off? 🔴 Congestion? 🔴 Double parking? 🔴 Cars blocking corners? 🔴 People reversing? 🔴 Engines idling? 🔴 Exhaust fumes? Good to have a week away from it, right? But there's also another way to reduce morning stress! Follow for more! @solveschoolrun.bsky.social
Have you noticed quieter roads this week? 🚸 The school holidays have a MASSIVE knock-on effect on traffic, as you can see. 🚗 🚗 In some areas the school run has been reported to increase pollution and bus times by an enormous 50% compared to school holidays. How is it where you live this week?
🌞 Picnic? 🌞 Playground? 🌞 Ice-cream run? 🌞 Holiday camp? 😓 It's too hot for the car this half term. So... 🤩 Take them in a cargo! 🌟 You'll get no complaints from the kids about travelling anywhere in one... (In fact, the journey will become the highlight!) Sold? Drop us your cargo questions!
Thank you #LewishamLabour for championing child safety and committing to all three of our #StreetsForKids campaign manifesto asks. Read about them here: www.solvetheschoolrun.org/streetsforkids We look forward to holding them to their promises! @cleancitiescampaign.org
