It’s the iconic scene where the flying saucer is coming in to land at a baseball field that started that whole trope.

last I used them in was chicken and dumplings. Not, uh, the noodly dumplings. The biscuity kind. basically "any old" chicken soup you like will do, the dumplings are a wet biscuit dough (recipe in the alt text.) I used a good brown stock that got turned cloudy with a splash of lemon juice,

a brown bowl of chicken and dumplings. The soup has buisquity-dumplings along with carrots, celery and a brown chicken stock made a bit cloudy with a splash of lemon juice.

the dumplings are 255g self rising flour or AP flour with an appropriate amount of baking powder and soda in it, 55g of cold butter cut into the flour, along with whatever fresh herbs you like (Chives and parsley for me.) Salt to taste.

3/4 cups buttermilk. it's best to cut the butter and the dry ingredients in before starting the soup/filling and keep that in the fridge. Mix in the buttermilk and drop in largish balls. They'll double in size.

Bake in a 350f oven, covered for 20 minutes then 10 minutes uncovered (or any combination there. Uncovered will let the dumplings brown more if you like that.)

The filling started with 2 finely choped shallots, and crushed/minced garlic cloves added just as they start turning translucent. the shallots will mostly break down. I also added the carrots in and let those sautee with the onions for a bit.

I used left over dark meat from roasted chicken, but you can use any kind of chicken. if it still raw, fry it off with the onions until it's browned- doesn't need to be fully-fully inside, just get some color on there (the chicken will continue cooking when you add the stock and bake the dumplings. same goes for the veggies- unless you like mushy carrots, don't go too far on them.)

A splash of lemon isn't really needed, but it brightens everything up, even if its easy to go to hard and overwhelm everything else. white wine is another option that's well received.
