#1. BOB TREVINO LIKES IT: My favorite film is the first film I watched with my daughter in the theater, her just strapped to me sleeping through it. But even without that context, this is a sweet uplifting movie about connection and I love seeing John Leguizamo playing a regular good dude.
Honorable Mentions (In Alphabetical Order BUGONIA COMPANION DUST BUNNY HAMNET
#2. WEAPONS: One of the most delightful theater experiences of the year, and Zach Cregger nails his sophomore horror film, but I feel like it has a timely message as well. I essentially view Aunt Gladys as an analogy for Fox News.
#3. ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER: The Best Picture of the year according to the Oscars is pretty appropriate. Telling of the moment, but only succeeds with the soulful guidance of Benicio Del Toro's Sensei Sergio, representing the calm collective organizing needed to sustain the movement.
#4. TRAIN DREAMS: A beautifully shot film that somehow captures how even the loneliest people are interconnected and how each life has meaning.
#5. THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME: While I was left cold by ASTEROID CITY, I found Wes Anderson's latest a return to form, a way of returning from his more polished works back to the scrappiness of poverty. Benicio Del Toro had one hell of a year and Michael Cera is a welcome addition to Anderson's style
#6. BLUE MOON: Ethan Hawke gives a deserved Oscar Nominated performance in this basically one location film, which feels like it could be a stage play in all the best ways, revealing his true range, and being an absolutely catty bitch.
#7. LESBIAN SPACE PRINCESS: If any film could win me by a title alone, it would be this scrappy Australian animated film, which is sweet, adorable, queer in the best ways, and hilarious. Also Aunty Donna is a welcome comedic addition to anything!
#8. THE LIFE OF CHUCK: Going in completely blind I was swept away by the shifting genres of each act and the game ensemble cast. Though the apocalyptic first act rang too true for the first year of Trump 2.0
#9. LITTLE AMÉLIE OR THE CHARACTER OF THE RAIN: The best and most interesting of the Animated feature nominees from the Oscars, and a touching coming of age film for a 3 year old.
#10. PRESENCE: While I never got around to catching BLACK BAG I do love me some Steven Soderbergh genre experiments, and this haunted house piece is moody in all the right ways.
Got to add a new entry to my special @letterboxd.social list of films I was the sole person in the whole theater for. A bit of a shame that it was for a movie as rooted in human connection as DISCLOSURE DAY. #Letterboxd
