Palestinian-American. Cat person. Mathematics professor. Leftist. Autistic but often told it’s not obvious. Nerd but not the consumerist kind. Arrogant but can back it up. Mathematic for the people.
I hope Simon MacCorkindale was a total asshole. Just an absolute dickhead. I hope he held up lines at airports all like, “Um, excuse me. You’re in the way. Manimal. Fall 1983. NBC-TV. So yeah. Kind of a big deal.”
This is my computer’s Windows Spotlight image for today. Even Windows knows.
Out of everyone in the United States, I’m the only person this excited about getting an official book full of metatext for a forgotten Japanese visual novel.
Well, this is the weirdest thing I’ve seen on the ground in a parking lot so far today.
Machi is occasionally funny, especially with the endings. I don’t get all the humor because I’m learning Japanese and autistic besides. But I’d love to see this game translated.
Besides the game’s obscurity and the prodigious volume of text, the biggest barrier to translating Machi is the bomb threats. The characters notice the three writing systems, the homophones, the position of each character, the use of English… They even notice the incorrect stroke order of one kanji.
A recent survey found the most difficult job in the world is “little kitty baby.”
You know when you throw up in your mouth a little? In Japanese, you would say, “The insect-acid runs.”
The cabbage cult is a religious organization called “Vegetable’s Prayer.” It occupies the 6th floor of the Okayama Building in Miyamasuzaka, which also houses Esthe de Elizabeth and Shichiyōkai. The cult’s selling points are polygamy and rumors that recruits lose weight. Popular with young women.
The “Machis,” as Keima calls them, are a trio of often truant high school girls who hang around Shibuya and all openly want to date Yōhei. They’re also every bit as gossipy and mean as you expect of a trio of private-school girls. Their catchphrase is, “We’ll start dieting tomorrow.”
But third place can’t be a record time. Y’all mofoes need calculus.
I encountered the word ババ色 and I searched to find its meaning. Multiple results say it’s the color of shit. I’m not a doctor, but all of these seem like medically concerning colors for your shit.
Shakespeare is famous in Japan too, but the famous quotations are clarified in translation. “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” → “Should one live or die, that is the problem.” “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?” → “Ah, Romeo, why is it that you are Romeo?”
One thing I resent the Marvel Cinematic Universe for is their anodyne Kevin-Feige-ass house style. We’ll never get anything as bold and chiaroscuro-y as Jack Kirby’s work.
Japanese has a 𝘵𝘰𝘯 of homophones, which is a massive pain. The hentai you (pretend you don’t) know and love is also the pronunciation of a Japanese word about changing fonts. I have no idea how this language is spoken without constant miscommunications.
MFW when liberals lecture me about how Democrats are trying to fix everything if we’d just donate.
プリン, the Japanese word for “pudding,” is also a raillery term for when a dark-haired person gets a bleach job and then the hair grows out for long enough for the roots to show. I see it. From my Googlings, it seems to show up in Japanese fashion as an on-purpose look.
Oops, I forgot this image. Ryūji mentions that Atsushi always reads the newspaper while he takes his daily shit. I’m sure this worldbuilding detail will become important. Hey, look, you ignored Macaulay Culkin’s allergies in My Girl, and you know how that turned out.
Atsushi Takamine (Ryūji’s father) is an executive at Yotsubishi*, a home appliance manufacturer. Ryūji’s resentment stems from Atsushi’s verbal abuse and knowing that Yotsubishi is secretly a massive war profiteer. * Mitsubishi literally means “three rhombuses.” Yotsubishi means “four rhombuses.”
Ryuji’s Day 2: Ryūji returns to his childhood home and tries to reunite with his family. The same tensions with his father come right back, culminating in Ryūji beating his father up. Ryūji then chugs a fifth of whiskey in Yoyogi Park and passes out. His day is over around 11 A.M. Lucky bastard.
One of many things I resent about the rise of A.I. is the loss of the craftsmanship of a good, properly batshit Photoshopping.
Despite being houseless and having no place to go, Ryūji sports a Dodane Type 21 Héritage wristwatch, which retails for over $4500 USD. France used to (still does?) supply these to members of the air force. The U.S. military would give you a rock for a sundial and then charge you.
Who better to represent humanity than the guy from Jamiroquai?
Doesn’t this imply that Sersi could un-Thing Ben Grimm whenever she wants?
Be sure you don’t offend native speakers when you say, “Fuck your mother.”
This says caffeine has no addictive or withdrawal effects, so it’s legal and healthy to get high on caffeine. Quick question what the fuck.
Ichikawa is terrified to fall asleep. His writings disappear while he sleeps. At 4:10 A.M., he brews coffee. Here are his choices: A. Add instant coffee. B. Add pickled plums, lemon, and Chinese onion. C. Add Tabasco, togarashi, La-Yu, wasabi, mustard, ginger, and garlic.
