l've tried to stay mild-silent about Mamdani because I don't live in New York (we've got enough issues here in LA) and Iknow and
LOVE a LOT of New Yorkers w my whole heart, be they're good people, and I suspect most voted for or like him but here's the thing:

Setting aside all of the evidence of his ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which exists only for the eradication of Jewish people, he went on live TV to broadcast hatred against Jews and has put them -all of them-in harm's way. Think about that.

I believe in destroying Iran's current regime which terrorizes Jews, its own people, and the world, but I do not believe the United States under Trump has any business or ability (or desire really) to successfully achieve those goals. I believe in defending Ukraine. I believe in Israel's right to defend itself, and in Israel's right to exist and to exist in peace. Yes, that makes me a Zionist.

I believe our tax dollars are well-spent funding the only democracy in the Middle East and that it is mutually advantageous for both nations and the world if we do so. I believe Netanyahu belongs in prison but that it is for the Israeli people to decide and to make that happen, just like I believe it is up to the American people to do the same here, with Trump. I also now know that offering up Netanyahu will not appease the antisemites on the left. (But neither would a ceasefire, or a 2-state solution.)

I do not believe in blaming every Jewish person around the world for the actions of Israel's govt but I hope those Americans who do believe that know to expect the same treatment for their government's actions. I believe that American Conservatives have lost (or rather *given up*) most of the ideals that they once had (national security, rule of law, patriotism, supporting our troops, the Constitution, basic freedom, scientific advancement) for the Tea Party, which has morphed into MAGA.

Similarly, I believe the Democratic Party is giving up (or handing over) every ideal it had (is supposed to have) for the Neo-Jihadists on the left - our own Tea Party. I will always believe that Trump is the worst, most corrupt and racist President to ever sit in the White House (so far) and that he is an existential threat to all of the United States, all of democracy, all humans, and in fact, the free world.
But I also know that the far left
-becoming less far than I like- is keeping him in power, whether they want to believe it, admit it, or not.

During the McCarthy era
Republicans painted every liberal who believed in civil liberties and equality and freedom of speech as a communist and Republicans knew they were lying when they did that. It was a shameful and dangerous time. Now, though, when Stephen Miller -the fascist-gets on TV and tells the millions of viewers that Democrats are communist... he's not completely lying like they were during McCarthy.

Most of us Democrats are not communist and Miller's audience doesn't know or care about the difference between communism, socialism, fascism, or liberalism.
But unfortunately, the far left is letting Stephen Miller -the Nazi!-be *correct* about what people are seeing in the streets - maniacs wrapped in keffiyehs praising Mao.
Wtf.

I believe in free and fair elections. I believe that not voting when you're eligible and able is a shame that people should carry forever or at the very least they should stop complaining about their govt if they don't participate in it. I don't believe in saying "I don't want to talk politics" because it is all political. Every inch of our lives is political. I believe in progress that is unfortunately going to have to be made through democratic means and democratic processes, which can be slow, and boring. I believe in coalition-building.

I know that tearing down the system of a democratic
government does NOT result in an idyllic new society. I know it results in things like Iran after 1979. I believe everyone should quickly understand the difference between the religion of Islam and the political ideology that is Islamism, that they should never be conflated and that the latter is dangerous. I believe the people of Iran should be liberated.

I believe I'm sitting on stolen land as I type this. I believe the sins committed by our founders against the indigenous, and the sins of slavery will haunt us forever if we don't face those truths about our founding. I believe we need to
-every single day, every minute, in every corner- call out and stamp out racism and antisemitism, hatred of Muslims, homophobia, misogyny, & ableism. We need to believe women and protect them from predators who exist on both sides of the political spectrum.

I believe in strict and sane gun control, but not in taking away everyone's guns. In fact I think I want one or two. I believe in a free press- free not just from
government intervention but from corporate billionaire dollars that skew the press to the right. But I also know we can no longer trust
much of the press coming from the left, especially that which is influenced by propaganda outlets like Al-Jazeera. The fourth estate really did fail us but it's the People who put those powers in place that corrupted and control the press in the first place.

I believe in science and if I had a religion it would be that. I believe in strong public health policy to protect citizens. I believe that democratic socialism sounds nice on paper and in fact I used to think I was a Democratic Socialist, but I'm not anymore. Or maybe the meaning as it is in the U.S. has changed. Because Democratic Socialists today -known as DSA in this country- say they are striving for something close to Denmark or Sweden, but in the same breath chant death to the west, to capitalism, to democratic norms.

I believe that the current iteration of the DSA (& probably the original but less obvious iteration), fueled by hatred of Jews and unchecked racism, champions something closer to communism. And I know that that is a ridiculous thing to champion, communism, while holding their phones made by Apple and going home to their comfortable, air-conditioned houses and retreating back to their $60,000 a year college educations... Fools. I believe that DSA has set us up for more failure and is proving Republicans right.

I believe in freedom of speech. I believe in equality for all. I believe in protecting our borders, but fixing our broken immigration system. I know for a fact that immigrants are a benefit to our society and not just culturally & socially, but economically too. I know immigrants pay billions and billions into our tax system and into our economy and in fact keep our economy growing. I believe that immigrants should maintain their right to seek asylum and should have a legal pathway to be here
-as long as they are pursuing that legal pathway- but regardless, that they should be treated as human beings and all should have due process.

I believe in a reformed police force, not a nonexistent police force. I believe in prison reform, not in abolishing prisons. Oh and fuck
ICE. I believe in protecting LGBTQIA rights, that love is love, that people should be free to be who they are, exactly as they see themselves. I believe that trans girls should be able to play in girls sports & that trans people should have equal protections and access to the same health services as anyone else.

I believe in reforming the Supreme Court, abolishing Citizens United, in restoring voting rights & in reinstating Roe. I believe Trump and every collaborator who has committed crimes should be held accountable. I believe every Democrat who has committed crimes should be held accountable.
But I also know that it's going to take Democrats having the majority in the House and a *super majority* in the Senate for many cycles in order to accomplish anything close to all of that.

I believe in DEl protections and I know in fact that it is actually white women who benefitted the most from DEI. I believe in learning from history, which means we have to preserve all of it and we have to tell and teach all history and that includes all the racism, all the antisemitism, all of the bigotries and hatred committed in our names that has hurt our world. It all needs to be shown and taught to future generations so they can learn to be curious, to not hate, and to not succumb to those same bigotries.

Similarly, I feel that I, as a white Democrat, should take responsibility and accountability for the extreme antisemitic, racist, misogynistic, bigoted psychosis growing in my own party. Anyway. Here’s what I believe:

I believe in the West because I believe in Democracy ™. I believe in capitalism with healthy socialist-y safety nets, a system where opportunity is actually available for everyone and where the tax dollars generated are assessed & charged fairly -not to benefit billionaires or punish lower income earners- and where those tax dollars are used to protect & lift all of our society.

I believe tax dollars should go towards funding- or unburdening the cost of- healthcare, education, food, housing, pro-environmental causes, infrastructure, technological advances & manufacturing. I know that by doing that a society gets stronger, people are able to be more successful, healthier, and to continue to work & build and grow... and to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

I really do believe that a healthy society comes from a strong middle class & that we should build from the middle out and the bottom up. I believe that is what gets us closer to an idyllic society. I believe in reforming all of our systems that have protected white supremacy and the patriarchy since the beginning of time.

But I do not believe in abolishing all systems or burning it all to the ground because I know that doesn't work. I believe in abiding by the Constitution while always striving to make the Constitution better. I believe in freedom of all religions -which means keeping
*your* religion to *your* own beliefs and actions & that religion has zero place in our legislation.
