St Mellion continued - 1 Radford's Flame Shoulder 1 Bordered Straw 574 Small Mottled Willow 502 Silver Y There's plenty of Painted Lady in the garden, in all life stages. Every single thistle has at least three larvae on it. #teammoth

Another good moth from St Mellion last night is this Mocha - confirmed by Leon as the first modern record for Cornwall (there's an old VCH record from Looe in 1890). #teammoth
A second, second record for Cornwall over the last two nights in St Mellion - Small Argent and Sable in the moth trap this morning. The first record was taken at light at Calstock Valley Field (border of VC2/VC3) on 19/6/2017. J. Cook. #teammoth
3 Ni Moth were potted among the hoards of Silver Y. There were likely more. Also a Striped Hawk-moth in one of the traps. A strong northerly breeze developed by dawn, blowing away many moths surrounding the traps, but counts of 837 Small Mottled Willow & 1240 Silver Y (likely in 1000's). #teammoth
Moth of the night in St Mellion was a Horse Chestnut - only the second record for Cornwall. #teammoth
Last night was the first time I'd ever considered switching off the moth traps as there were too many moths coming in! By midnight, moths almost covered the moth traps and surrounding walls - mostly Silver Y & Small Mottled Willow, which were in their 1000's. #teammoth

An autumnal night in St Mellion, with a strong southerly wind and rain. There was a new species to Cornwall in the moth trap in the shape of Smoky Wave (Scopula ternata). Whether it arrived from France on the southerlies or dispersed from Dartmoor, we'll never know. #teammoth

I've just totaled the number of Small Mottled Willow (S. exigua) recorded in the garden so far this year and it's a staggering 2040! Last year was the previous best at 874 and before that just 24!!!
Another busy night in St Mellion, with 184 species in the garden moth traps. The min. overnight temp. was 24.4c (garden record), although it was still 26.5c at 2am. Mad! 2 Striped Hawk-moth (41 recorded this year!) & Convolvulus Hawk the highlights (there were 2 but one was a recapture). #teammoth

With the night time temperature not falling below 20.5c there was a blizzard of moths in the garden last night, with at least 225 species recorded - the highest total I have recorded anywhere. Also an increase in migrants including: Loxostege sticticalis (Mugwort Pearl) - new 10km square #teammoth

A mild (min 13.5c) & cloudy night in St Mellion, with a westerly breeze, with a total of 136 species recorded at light. The highlight was a lifer in the shape of Agrotera nemoralis (Beautiful Pearl) - a new 10km square for the species, which either wandered from the coast or is a migrant. #teammoth
