Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) 5801 led 5811, and others westbound, including ATSF 510, towards Cable, CA from Tehachapi, CA on Sunday, February 23, 1992.
ATSF 5801 was an EMD SD45-2u. Reportedly: ATSF 5801 was built in 1973 as ATSF 5681 an SD45-2 builder number 72642-38. It became SPSF painted SD45-2u 7201 in 1986. It was renumbered and repainted as ATSF 5801 in 1991. It later became BNSF 6451 and later still NREX 6451

Halloween on the 4th of July
On Saturday, July 4, 2026, two Southern Pacific (SP) Halloween units were working in Klamath Junction Yard at the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC) in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA. SP 6351 and 5665 are HO Athearn Genesis models.
The real SP 6351 was an EMD F7A, SP Class DF-7. Reportedly it was built in 1951, serial number 12756. It became SP Class EF415A-7 in the 1965 renumbering. It was retired and sold in 1967.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Baltimore and Ohio railroad museum (reporting mark BOMX) in Baltimore, Maryland, was the museum's Octoraro Railway Incorporated (reporting mark OCTR) number 3.
The museum's OCTR 3 is an ALCo S2. Reportedly, it was built in 1948 as Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (reporting mark BO) 519, serial number 76183. The locomotive was renumbered BO 9063, it's final BO number. It became OCTR 3 before being donated to the museum.

On Sunday, March 28, 2010, Golden Gate Railroad Museum's (GGRM) Southern Pacific (SP) 4-6-2 Class P8 Pacific 2472 was in Niles Canyon being towed backwards by Pacific Locomotive Association's (PLA) SP SD9 (SD9E) 5472 which was on the west end of the train. The location is called Estates Crossing which is just west of Niles Canyon Railway's Brightside Yard. Though it looks like the 2472 is a manned rear end DPU, it is not!
GGRM's SP 2472 is a Baldwin Locomotive Works built SP Class P-8, 4-6-2. Reportedly it was built in 1921, builders number 54477. It was vacated in 1957 and donated to San Mateo County in 1959. In 1976 a group of volunteers started restoring the locomotive. This group became the GGRM, the current owner-operator of SP 2472.

My HO model of BNSF Railway (reporting mark BNSF) 8279 on Friday, June 26, 2026, was at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers (TCSME) model railroad club in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA.
The real BNSF 8279 was an EMD SD75I. Reportedly: it was built in 1997, serial number 966740-4. It was subsequently renumbered BNSF 279.
My model is an Athearn Genesis model.

California Northern (CFNR) SD9 203 was sitting at Napa Junction, CA, on Sunday, July 14, 1996.
CFNR 203 was an EMD SD9 (SD9E). Reportedly: it was built in 1955 as SP 5377, SP Class DF-121, builder's number 20228. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 3855 SP Class EF618-2.
This locomotive was upgraded in 1971 emerging as SP 4331 SD9E SP Class EF618E-1.
This locomotive was sold 1994, becoming CFNR 203. Reporting marks and numbers associated with this locomotive reportedly include: SLC 602, KMGX 57602, WRIX 602, TMRX 602, KMGX 602.

SP 6809 was an EMD SD45T-2 (SD45T-2R), SP Class EF636R-7. Reportedly: it was built in 1972 builder number 7336-02, as SP SD45T-2 9167, SP Class EF636-7. In 1987 it was upgraded and became SP 6809. In 1999 it was retired.

Connecticut Department of Transportation (CDOT) 2016 was leading a commute train at Stamford, CT on Thursday, June 29, 1995.
CDOT 2016 was an EMD FL9. Reportedly: it was built in 1960 as New Haven 2044, serial number 21990. It became PC 5044, before becoming MNCR 5044 then MNCR 2016 and then CDOT 2016. It reportedly survived.
According to Otto Vondrak (in Feb. 2019), "The CDOT 2016 was part of the gang of six auctioned off in 2018, and the 2016 is now at Grapevine Railroad in Texas."

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, were several examples of early railroading. The locomotive on the right is a replica of the Tom Thumb, the first American-built steam locomotive to operate on a common-carrier railroad. It was designed and constructed by Peter Cooper in 1829 to convince owners of the newly formed Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) (now CSX) to use steam engines; it was not intended to enter revenue service. It is especially remembered as a participant in a race with a horse-drawn car, which the horse won after Tom Thumb suffered a mechanical failure.
The real Tom Thumb was built by Peter Cooper in 1829.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum (reporting mark BOMX) in Baltimore, Maryland, was Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (reporting mark BO) BO 51.
The museum's BO 51 is an EMC EA. Reportedly, built in 1937, serial number 666, it was the first streamlined diesel-electric locomotive in the world. In 1953 it was traded back to EMD. It was stripped of its usable machinery, cosmetically restored, and sent to the newly opened Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Transportation Museum, as it was known at the time.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Baltimore and Ohio railroad museum (reporting mark BOMX) in Baltimore, Maryland, was the museum's Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O, reporting mark CO) 490.
The Museum's C&O 490 is an ALCo built L-1 class 4-6-4 Hudson. Reportedly it was built in 1926 as a 4-6-2 serial number 66555. It was rebuilt in 1946 to becoming a streamlined 4-6-4. In 1968 it went to the museum.

N.E. Regional No. 174 in Baltimore
Amtrak (AMTK) 604 was leading Northeast Regional Train 174 on Thur, May 21, 2026, at the Baltimore, MD, Penn Station. My great nephew and I took this train from Washington DC to Baltimore to visit the B&O Museum.
AMTK 604 is a Siemens ACS-64. Reportedly it was built in 2015.

I embrace being an amateur train hobbyist! I don't want to be considered an artist or an expert, because I don't want to think of myself that way. Whenever I have embraced terms like artist or expert I have found they start to degrade my enjoyment of trains. Whether it be real or model trains I like to photograph and/or model what I like, where I like and whatever era I like. New, old, rare, obscure, everyday, action or roster. I am my own target audience. I embrace being an amateur train hobbyist!
