In Ueno, Tokyo, I unexpectedly came across a Rodin sculpture I’d been infatuated with in London, the Burghers of Calais, walking toward sacrifice to free their town from the British. There are 12 original casts worldwide, I've also visited the one in Musee Rodin, Paris, so that’s 3 down and 9 to go😁

The Burghers of Calais by Auguste Rodin in the grounds of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, Japan. With genius mastery, Rodin captures the humanity of the 6 subjects who have volunteered their lives for Calais - draped in sackcloth with ropes around their necks - they are humiliated by the English. Rodin shows the tensions they are subjected to in their exaggerated hands and feet. However, the story does have a happy ending - their bravery impresses the English, and they are eventually freed by the King.

This beautiful golden statue of Nyoirin Kannon can be found in the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple, Nara, Japan. Nyoirin Kannon -the Bodhisattva of Compassion - holds a wish-granting jewel. She grants peace and eliminates suffering - I placed my order - she has an awful lot of work to do 🕊️

I visited the Holburne Museum in Bath today (the one in Bridgerton) - to see Don McCullin's retrospective, Broken Beauty. Fractured statues were the theme, but it was the people in his early work who felt truly broken to me. On leaving, I felt broken too; humanity has learned nothing since the 60s.

More home-made soap. I’ve even tried some and, so far, no mysterious rashes 🥵 I put them on the windowsill to catch what little sunlight we get, because a few are transparent. In fact, they should all be transparent, but clearly the soap‑making gods had other plans 😁
