Well folks, here's hoping my relative's home & my family cottage in Mooseland don't burn to the ground overnight. I have some opinions about the handling of communications in this situation because that area has basically no cell service whatsoever. The evacuation should have been called much sooner

UPDATE 2 - JACKET LAKE WILDFIRE
The Jacket Lake wildfire remains out of control and is now estimated at approximately 200+ hectares.
Throughout the afternoon, the fire continued to spread to the south and east, crossing Mooseland Road and establishing fire on the east side of the roadway. The fire has also crossed Jacket Lake and continues to spread.
Halifax Professional Fire Fighters continue working alongside the Department of Natural Resources to contain the fire under challenging conditions.
As fire conditions changed, the crews' planned exit route was burned over. Fire fighters and DR personnel established a safe refuge area and are now safely exiting the affected area.
Air resources remain heavily engaged, including DR helicopters and fixed-wing water bombers. Additional fixed-wing aircraft from Newfoundland and New Brunswick have also joined the response to support suppression efforts.

First #Kidicalmasshfx ride of the 2026 season! Also my first ever time marshalling for a ride. Every time I join a group ride in the city I am reminded how lovely of a community we have here in Halifax. It was really neat to see the @hfxgov.bsky.social bike lane sweeper in action too! #Bikehfx

Fitting timing for me to have finally framed my interview with @thechronicleherald.bsky.social & my mention in @grandparade.bsky.social for my participation in Halifax's budget debates on the day of its ratification. I never dreamed I would be this invested in municipal politics, but here we are!

Thank you to @timbousquet.bsky.social for including my commentary on the NS budget cuts in today's Morning File of the @halifaxexaminer.ca! I desperately hope some of the proposed cuts are reversed before the budget passes

I am saddened and also enraged by many of the cuts proposed to essential aspects of our province. Make no mistake; if the province chooses to go forwards with many of the cuts proposed, they will actively drive people out of this province.
As a university student who is about to graduate, I have many hard decisions in front of me about my future. One of those decisions is where I want to set up my life. I grew up a Nova Scotia resident my entire life in South Rawdon, and an HRM resident in Halifax for the duration of my
Bachelor's degree. I want to stay in this province, with the friends, community, and volunteer opportunities I am connected to, but why would I, if this province cannot love me back enough to provide arguably basic civic services?

I have been getting my university education with the end goal of becoming someone who works in our libraries in Nova Scotia. This budget, if it proceeds without adjustments, will quite literally force me to change my career and life plans that I have had for almost a decade. I am not only disheartened but enraged by the idea that I will not be able to work my dream career just in the name of slashing budget dollars off of a line item.
Libraries, museums, archives and arts programs are not a nice to have; they are a need to have. They are necessary community services and they make our province as vibrant as it is.

The Nova Scotia Choral Federation also alerted its members this morning that it is looking at a 20% reduction in provincial funding. This funding could mean that programs that serve children, particularly those in rural areas, to gain access to arts programming could either be diminished or outright canceled. My attendance of the Choral Federation's Youth Choir Camp for multiple summers was a life-changing
experience. I know many people at these programs where the community that they experienced at said camps were not only heartwarming but quite literally saved their lives. To think that this programming which was a vital space for me; one of the first I felt safe to fully be myself in as a queer youth, may no longer exist, breaks my heart.

On Thursday August 6, Halifax's Bn-
vironment and Sustainability standing
committee met and got a few presenta-tions. There was some good news: the
oeting was
bell and Mike Lancaster, who gave a presentation about community-based wilderness stewardship. The two men, representing the St. Margaret's Bay Stewardship Association, highlighted the benefits of having local community members take custodial ownership of their nearby wild places. But there are drawbacks too, even though this group of volunteers, and other stewardship groups, are huge boons to this city; they are volunteers, and as the city has grown, so too has the demand on their
wondraship.
One of the many reasons Halifax has been able to keep its property caxes and user fces so low for so long is that essential parts of the HRM's operations, like wilderness management (and rural firefighting), are being done for free by volunteers. But these volunteers are at max capacity, and there are a lot of natural places in the HRM that could benefit from local stewardship.

Last week was a big week for Halifax's new(ish) city council, they finally passed the first reading of their strategic plan to make the city their very own. The strategic plan is a result of almost a year of councillors telling staff their priorities, and city staff turning those priorities into a plan. The strategic plan passed on Tuesday (Sam Austin and Trish Purdy the lone votes against it).

Many thanks to everyone for a lovely experience with my first ever bike ride in Halifax as part of #Kidicalmass this morning! It is very evident that our local cycling community is full of kindness and care. I felt very safe and looked after as a new duckling of the flock!

1.2.1 Building on existing initiatives
The RTP did not start from scratch. It was built on a considerable body of work by the Core Partners and municipalities in the region,
and it complements and extends existing plans and projects, which propose important improvements to the transportation system.
It also works towards Nova Scotia's climate goals, building on existing net-zero initiatives underway across the province.
The RTP is shaped by provincial population projections and the expectations of municipalities in the Region for how this growth will be geographically distributed.
It is the first transportation plan in the province to account for the pace of recent growth and the potential for continued growth.
Business as Usual Scenario
Transportation projects that have been initiated or committed to prior to the completion of the RTP are included in a Business as Usual (BAU) scenario - a future without any of the further interventions outlined in the RTP. This BAU scenario allows for the comparison of a future with and without the RTP.
The BAU includes:
• 100-series highway investments including the Highway 107 extension connecting Sackville and Bedford to Burnside, twinning along Highways 101 and 103, capacity enhancements along Highway 102, and select interchange upgrades.
• The Windsor Street Exchange Redevelopment and the Halifax Port Rail Solution.
• New connections between Trunk 2 in Wellington and Highway 102, as well as between Hammonds Plains and Highway 101.
• The Mill Cove Ferry.
• HRM's Regional Centre All Ages & Abilities Cycling Network and select active transportation projects that have secured funding to date.
