Of course NPCs fight back, but even inanimate objects can present obstacles. A simple, well-oiled lock has low EL*, while a complex or rusted mechanism presents a much higher challenge. (Much funnier with the associated image.) 😆 *EL = "Effective Level"

The world rolls dice against your ambitions; everything pushes back. When you attempt something hard, roll your EL against the task's EL. The higher roll wins.

If you roll a 7 and the task rolls a 4, you achieve 3 points of effect, as long as you didn't go over your own EL. It works the same whether you're fighting a goblin, picking a lock, or sweet-talking a guard, with one very important difference: some things just resist, but others hit back. (We keep mentioning that you can roll over your EL; we'll explain how that's possible later.)"

For no particular reason other than that I have been enjoying myself, I wanted to share a bit of embedded flash-fiction from my rules-in-progress. This is the color story for conjurors. Most of the stories are longer and have embedded sections explaining the dice, but I liked this one. #OKImaSap

The image is the text of a flash-fiction of about 4500 words.
It tells the story of a conjuror who sees an old man walking toward a cottage by the sea with a letter in his hand - he checks the address, then turns away to the beach where he falls to his knees to weep.

The spirit of the man's wife is trying to get the Conjuror to help, so she goes down to the beach to speak to him, to tell him the wife is sorry, but he's not here because he's hurt. He found the love letter from the man who lived in the cottage, and only came here because it said the sea off the shore of his home looked like her eyes.

"I jes' wanted to see 'em again, but it's jes' the sea." he weeps.

The conjuror allows the spirit to her her as a conduit to comfort the man, and he expires happy to have seen her again. They rise away together.

Ugh. My d5 looks ok - a d10 with 0123401234 sides. My d14 is trickier. The app we used to add 0 on the high sides of "normal" dice doesn't do cuboctohedrons, so my bud with a printer stuck a fill cone in and added the zero himself, but the 14 shows beneath in the hole. We need to color-fill. #DICE

A 3d printed cuboctohedral die numbered from 0 to 13, and a d10 renumbered with 0 to 5 twice.

The original 14 can still be seen in the hole made by the zero printed on that side.
