The Needfire by M.K. Hardy. Excellent book of creepy gothic stuff and sapphic longing set in the very north of Scotland in the Nineteenth Century. Damn good.

Here’s some screenshots of the gobsmacking room.

It seems David Daker has died. Another sad loss, he was in so much (including Dick Turpin, currently being shown on Talking Pictures). R.I.P.

This time David Daker is on the right, and significantly less hairy — his face is fully visible for a start, and his hairline is a bit receding. He’s wearing a black and silver futuristic ensemble that wouldn’t look out of place in Blake’s 7. Beside him are Tom Baker as the Doctor and Lalla Ward as Romana. They’re obviously in some sort of space ship. The Doctor’s hand is raised and his expression suggests he’s attempting to calm things down. Rigg (Daker) certainly looks tense, and if he’s not going to lamp someone he’s probably going to shout a bit. ( Doctor Who: Nightmare of Eden )

According to Tom Shakespeare, a professor of disability research, very few disabled people openly back the social model concept, and many have actively disowned it. Shakespeare has dismissed it as a simplistic ideology which has gone too far and become the litmus test of disability correctness. He argues that it fails to correspond to the everyday experience of disabled people for whom personal struggles are far more disabling than social barriers.

“Unforced errors” is quite a way to describe Starmer’s targeting of the vulnerable and marginalised, authoritarian approach to everything, and telling much of Labour’s core support to piss off. But sure, you go on blaming the media.

An impressive win for Burnham. He'll soon replace Starmer.
He must 1. Deliver, 2. Communicate a simple narrative of change & 3. Prevent big unforced errors.
If he doesn't, his premiership will be tanked by the same online/tabloid campaign of demonisation and disinformation that destroyed Starmer.

Starmer's leadership had plenty of problems. Unforced errors and epically failing to communicate the really good work that his govt has done.
But the "worst PM ever" and fury he's faced is insanely disproportionate and shows how vulnerable Labour PMs are to disinfo campaigns if they don't ace govt.

The U.S. celebrations for the country’s 250th anniversary are imminent. Can’t help remembering when I got one of these, 51 years ago, celebrating the 800th anniversary of Glasgow (every schoolkid in the city got one).

This is shocking. Even to ask this is shocking. How can people who lack the capacity to make decisions about their care & treatment *possibly* give valid consent to their confinement?

Does the Minister of Health for Northern Ireland have the power to revise the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Code of Practice ("the Code") so that persons aged 16 and over who lack capacity to make decisions about their care and treatment can give valid consent to their confinement through the expression of their wishes and feelings?

There is a very small segment at the very top of the picture which might be sky.

Across the middle, sloping upwards from the left along the line of the broadest building’s roof, is the book title. Lower on the right and sloping down along another roof is the author’s name.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth and Other Stories of Horror, by H.P. Lovecraft

The cover illustration shows a broad band of sandy yellow, along its top is arranged the silhouettes of a town with angular roofs and the shape of a church; slightly closer at one end is the outline of a tree, branches bare, and the low humps of gravestones.

Above the land, the sky goes from pale to deep blue, with a crescent moon near the top right, partly overlain with the title.

A large figure of someone in a long, black coat dominates the picture. The clothes seem old fashioned (19th or maybe even 18th century). The figure goes from almost completely transparent at the bottom to apparent solidity at the head; the shadowy town is visible through the middle of the figure, at roughly waist level.

What is most striking about the figure is that it has green, claw-like hands and a broad, green inhuman face, like some sort of cross between human and fish or perhaps frog.

The cover is illustrated with a picture drawn in a gently comic style of a morose looking man in black coat and wearing a black top hat, clearly an undertaker; beside him is a short woman, apparently working class, who is obviously speaking volubly. There is something in her eyes which suggests she might not be wholly in touch with reality.

I’ve had two editions of this, and I think on the whole I prefer the later one, in Penguin Classics style. I find it interesting that these stories can work so well despite the underlying philosophy being one I don’t share.
