chaotic foolish. writer, critic and recovering TV producer. host of Going Rogue, a podcast about troubled films and the industry that makes them, if you even care.
doing a single day in studio but it’s the last episode so they have to let me into the wrap party

obsessed with Ian Flemming's daily schedule - swim - brunch - write 1500 words no edits just freestyle - lobster hunting - pink gin - lunch - siesta - sit in garden - another swim - 500 more words - "a couple of powerful drinks" - dinner - scrabble with wife - sleep
also obviously every adaptation has a total smokeshow as Mercedes but special credit to Anaïs Demoustier who made my friend gasp out loud and say “she looks like an actual person!”
Avoid at all costs the 2025 miniseries with Sam Claflin. Inexcusably dull, expensive looking but cheap feeling (a lotta very quiet, listless conversations in empty rooms). A series made to be sold, not watched.
if you’re in the mood for the halcyon pre-9/11 adventure movie days, the 2002 film is very watchable but doesn’t quite hold up. Guy Pearce is diabolically cunty but there’s an insidious American Christianity to it which is an especially ill fit for the book. Luis Guzman & Michael Winncott also good
okay my general rec is the 2024 French film cos it’s a solid and judicious adaptation of the 1250page book and also every single outfit is serving Cunt of Monte Cristo. It doesn’t quite beat the miniseries accusations between dips to black & montages & recurring musical motifs but I think it’s neat.
are the production margins at netflix getting so thin they couldn't even turn on the heater for this press photo. idris looking cold as fuck.
The Bluff could have been a really interesting metatextually because it was originally gonna star Zoe Saldana but unfortunately it instead has Priyanka Chopra dressed like Katniss from the Hunger Games
you gotta get the actor AND the film to get full points (I was lowkey shocked how many more teams got the film for 9 than 6)
a beloved director whose work was already mentioned in the script has entered the 250 page legal document
oh cool so this new ep will just be a single film, one early draft to read and compare to the final cut, maybe a few influences to watch which are actually good movies... *a 250 page legal document has entered the chat*
*sitting bolt upright in the middle of the night* did I talk about the fact the messages on the moveable map in Pirates 3 are written in English but in like, a Chinese Takeaway font? the episode was 90 minutes did I find time to talk about it?
concept: a dual wielding Jedi but instead of a belt they keep their lightsabers on a shoulder holster like a wedding photographer
finding an early draft of a critically despised film finding two early drafts of a critically despised film finding three early drafts of a critically despised film
deep cleaned the apartment for a rental inspection and now i can’t move for the four hour window in case I leave some sign that I exist in the space I pay a lot of money to live in.
re: my argument about how certain colours look different in B&W and it’s impossible to shoot for both - this woman is wearing this necklace.
