Late night DXing to wind down Seems to get a lot happier every time I power it back up to play some quiet tunes through it :)
Newest restoration! A 1959 Sony TR-84! Needed all new caps, a very intensive and gentle cleaning for the whole outer casing with the chassis out, and a rebuild of the on/off mechanism on the rear of the volume pot, but! It's alive!!
I may have had a god awful day with too many "there's no way this can get any worse" moments where it definitely did But I found some tools from the 70s and 80s that allowed me to make two whole channels It's starting to feel a lot more like a little micro environment where analog TV prevails 👀💦
Managed to get a more period correct live stream working with it courtesy of @foxcouncil.com too! Complete with period accurate commercials and everything!! THIS IS SO DAMN COOOOL
Have a little sampling of what analog over-the-air used to look like now that I've ported CBC through to it :)
Got the thing~ It works almost too well when the antenna is tuned right, I can watch anything on this pocket tv all over the apartment, but haven't done a proper range test yet 👀
This might be the coolest damn science experiment I have ever done, oh my GOD Using the Bose to make sure it was bang on 850, and it seems this thing goes a lot further than I expected which is.... A little worrying LMFAO Time to try the much more fun radios w this 👀
Ok last one I promise I just can't really put into words the supreme satisfaction and fascination in resurrecting something from completely dead, to hearing it sing and talk for one more run in a completely different era This thing is burnt, cracked, yellowed and in all regards beaten, and yet :)
Somehow fixed it Kinda Idk it works now that's good enough for me, I may make a better fix down the road though, even the damn caps from the 50s work incredibly well LMAO Enjoy some modern styling, by 1958 standards :)
Giggling at this message as well when the 3G did finally connect to a network Which it probably hadn't done in over a decade LOL
Short answer is no, longer being im not even sure it's still operational at all since the post was from a number of months ago BUT maybe I'll bring these out to the coastline one day, and it was really neat seeing these old phones connect to anything at all operationally :) Also it's pretty out ❤️
I don't have tummy tuesday pics today but uuhhhhhh Have this instead, happy tuesday :)
Found: a neat little guy! It did not work at all due to a "dew" error, but blow drying the cassette compartment seems to have sorted that LMFAO
Plan to take it camping over summer, get a SIGNIFICANTLY nicer ultra thin speaker into it that is more than double the rated limit, which shouldn't blow again (and possibly may even sound better) and see what it's capable of! Fascinatingly, it is the only radio I own that can receive the OIRT band!
Newest repair project! This positively miniature shortwave traveller radio! Speaker was completely blown (complete with metal wires rattling inside the case 💀) and the case cracked in three places Little bit of epoxy and a holdover speaker got it singing again! ❤️
More refurbishment with another boombox, arrived not working at all and now almost 100% works as new :) This one sounds mind bogglingly good in the same way an old Bose wave music system sounds and I cannot WAIT to take it to a beach or lake this spring/summer 👀
Did more work on the absolute unit today, figured this would be a long term project that'd continue to be ongoing as I source other scrap units to fix this one up But never realized how far I'd get with just the deoxit alone LOL
Swapped carriers recently after my prior network was absolutely gouging me And found out I had accidentally stumbled onto one of the last networks in my country that still supports it's legacy 2G/Edge networks which means it's time for some goofy old cellular shenanigans :)
