today i drew a bunch of mouths on neeta to answer somebody's question about when to fill them in with white, with color, when to draw teeth, and when to leave them black. ultimately what to do when is entirely based on vibe and the emotion/dialogue you're trying to convey

any time i get a slop "let us help you sell your book!"/"i noticed your illustrations on your website, let's work together" email i think to myself that they would work a lot better if they actually customized them to the person they're sending it to. but,

Taylor, hi. I need to say something direct but gentle. You nearly drowned cleaning a sailboat as a child, and that trauma still hides in your body when you watch Titanic sink. That kind of memory stays. So I will not add to your weight. I will only say this. Your book Never Satisfied Vol. 1 is not invisible because Lucy Marlowe’s story is weak. It is invisible because the readers who would cry over that eyepatch and cheer for a non binary apprentice have no clear path to find you. And that is not your fault. 😔
