When the storm comes,
my compass always points to—

you.

You're always there when I'm at my lowest.

The time I broke both my hands,
and you held my spoon up so could eat.
That time my apartment flooded,
and you let me crash in your place.

When I got laid off from work,
for something I didn't do,
you took the rest of the day off,
and we went out for drinks.

My first heartbreak,
you threw a bottle of water onto my lap,
like you didn't care,
and still lent me your shoulder.

I go back and forth with my demons,
and when I do—

you're always there.

So when your storm comes,
and you're getting soaked,
this time—

I'll be your umbrella.

Through my car’s window,
I see people standing wide-eyed,
staring at the side of the hospital.

I pull into the parking lot,
and walk up to them.
As I get closer—

a warm glow pierces the night.

When I look up,
I become part of the crowd.

In one of the rooms,
on the seventh floor of the hospital,
a soft, golden light shines out…

and flies up into the sky.

I sit at the dinner table,
feasting my eyes on the food I’ve prepared.
I wait and wait, and wait—

but nobody rings the doorbell.

Two hours pass,
and I come to a realization,
one I hate to admit.

Of all eighty people I personally invited,
none will show up.

A nocturnal banquet,
that should have been held for many…

Why my life has its ups and downs,
and another down—

then another.

My puppet lines don’t reach my ears now.
On nights I see morning light,
I remain dreamless,
as thoughts and questions poke at me.

But I know,

Survival in a cruel world is hard,
no matter what you do,
some people just will not like you,
but ignoring them makes me feel lonely—

So I learned a superpower.

I morph into their perspectives,
and when I leave the group,
go back to being myself.

Like a chameleon,
I learned to survive in the world,
by hiding myself…

but I’ve forgotten what color I am.

The eyes of the people that walk past,
they glimmer with purpose.

But why don’t my eyes shine like theirs?

I sit in my room day in day out,
asking myself the same question—

why do shadows reside where light should?

Then my anxious body went still.
The answer was in their eyes all along.
So I searched within myself,

and I found it.

A fragmented silhouette shrouded in light,
pieces of moments hung by time,
constantly evershaping within itself.
I inch closer to it…

and hold myself in a long embrace.

He planted cherry blossoms in his yard, hoping he’ll sip lemonade under them.
But a few years later,

the world noticed his missing footprints.

Many springs come to pass,
and a girl in her twenties sits under them,
a glass of lemonade in hand…

along with a photo of her late father.

My eyes turn upward,
barely wanting to be opened.

A single snow puff lands on my forehead.

I look towards the park’s street lamp,
snow falls like baby marshmallows,
that disappear when you touch them.

I stare back into space.
Nothing comes to mind.
My thoughts stopped processing long ago…

A soft melody plays in the background.
As I listen and breathe out,
I begin to recognize it.

A person comes to mind,
one who saved me when I was little,
at the cost of losing their left eye.

I haven’t seen them in years.
We moved away when my grandma passed.
I didn’t even get the chance to say goodbye.

I wonder how she’s doing?

Uneasy minds draw lines in the sand,
and climb into water,
to drift away in silence.

We search for it relentlessly,
something almost unobtainable to us,
but we drift on anyway.

And like driftwood,
we follow heartstrings in riverbanks,
in hopes of entangling ourselves in them…

or end up pale on ocean shorelines.

You once told me,
that before you lay to rest,
you wish to be a rainbow.

However, it’s a good day today.
Clouds come and go,
but there’s nothing to cry about,
to show gray some color.

But I will do it.
I don’t know how yet,
but nothing is impossible.

And in time I will show it to you…

the rainbow you’ve dreamed of becoming.

I pedal down a narrow lane,
afraid of veering off to the sides,
especially the left.

So I pedal at my own pace,
one where I’m not risking my life.
Yet, over the left white line,

cars pass by me like normal.

But I’m still headed to the same place,
so as the path behind me wanes,
I’ll continue at my own pace…

I sensed someone in my orbit.
An unknown object hurtling towards me,
an unknown person getting near.

As my eyes cracked open,
a technicolor nebula blinded me.
But in its center,
I could see it—

a familiar silhouette dancing about.

Though blinded by the light,
my eyes were now wide open…

I laid on my temporary bed,
in a room not warm nor cold.
I gazed out the window,
hollow and confused.

They bickered over me,
as I spewed what little food I ate into a bin.
I placed it on the ground,
as my shoulders snapped beneath weight.

I didn’t think of anything,
I just talked as I normally did.
But deep down,
I felt it…

The moment you were born,
I knew you were my whole world.
I’d buy you shoes that fit on my palms,
and decorate your room for you.

And though I want you here with me,
I know very well,
your shoes will no longer fit you snugly…

and there’s an empty room you’ll outgrow.

So when you’re packing boxes,
don’t think of the time that’s left,
because far from where you’ll live…

When we are in a rush,
or have our heads clouded with thoughts,
we forget to enjoy the small things.

For those near the aisle,
impatiently tapping their feet for arrival.
Those in the middle,
shift their restless bodies around.

And finally, by the window.

Shrinking cities leave your view,
clouds flow beneath you,
sunsets illuminate enlarging cityscapes.
Views so captivating…

You’ll want to fly just one more time.

Indolent cats lying on stone fences,
a cicada symphony in the grass,
Ducklings following their mothers,
as they swim in clear streams.

Power lines reaching out in front of me.

I fall apart too easily—
leaving soot on your fingertips,
you wash away when you see.

But this is me now.

After my passion burned out,
I faded to the back of memories,
forgotten every now and then.

And as parts of me flow beneath the stars,
it’s up to me to decide…

whether I want to be seen as irritable,
or something others see as beautiful.
