Discord Teen Council: Building with teens, not just for them

Safety features work best when they are informed by the people they are meant to support. That’s why we’re excited to share that we are launching Discord’s first Teen Council, with recruitment opening to teens (13-17 years old) beginning in the United States. Applications will be open until May 2026.

The Teen Council will bring real teen perspectives directly into safety, wellbeing and experience discussions, helping shape future features and platform updates. It’s an important step toward ensuring Discord continues to reflect what teens actually want, need and enjoy, not just what adults think they need.

The clown behavior is actually beyond uncomfortable. At the same time they're launching this age verification (just in Oct. Discord confirmed a massive security leak in identifying information btw, so no reason to trust this is secure), they're accepting applications for a 'teen council':

Withdraw your sexual content updates, it is obvious they weren't written with actual user feedback in mind. A significant number of your earliest userbase was artists affected by broad and damaging moderation stances as these. You have given users the tools to avoid seeing this content, and you have the ability to address individual cases where content is incorrectly labeled for filter purposes.

The bluesky community has been hosting the largest anti-censorship movement against payment processors for this exact issue. This decision was absolutely not made with the user feedback. Not only is it a blatant betrayal of the users by misleading what the feedback would be used for, you settled on decisions that the community has been discussing widely as dangerous and harmful moderation points that are easy to abuse.

The broader issues that affect the community as a whole:

-We have filter and label tools in place. Why would users have trust in a platform that will not allow users to rely on them as intended, and remove the freedom of choice from their hands?

-Publicly shaming/condemning art and creative liberties is currently a tactic being used around the world to suppress speech, and being used as a weapon of authoritarianism.

-Any excessive moderation of artistic/fictional adult, sexual content is an easy target for bigoted abuse, particularly LGBT issues. Again, this is the exact movement of anti-censorship that the bluesky community has been rallying around.

-Removing the ability to correctly label explicit content does not remove that content, and realistically will not prevent it––it opens up a dangerous situation where the content will still be posted, but without the correct safeguards.

The logistical issues that will cause more work and more harm than good:

-Who determines what is ‘non-consensual’ in creative expression/fiction? Will moderators be expected to look at all explicit content to decide if a fictional expression is demonstrating non-consent?

-Who is supposed to provide consent in the case of an artistic or fictional creative work? The creator? They have access to labels to correctly flag this content as explicit. The viewers? They have access to the filters that would give them the chance to consent before looking at it. The fictional characters? See: the creator. Fictional characters do not have the ability to consent, and to imply as much is ridiculous.

-Not all non-consensual situations appear non-consensual, and to imply this is an easily determined observation is incredibly dangerous.

-What will this moderation apply to? Only individual and small-reach creators? All fictional content including massively successful media such as Game of Thrones?

If none of this is convincing enough, host an open forum to hear from your community directly, and where the community can see the feedback truthfully. And know that these decisions have historically been the most damaging to make.
