My state Board of Nursing (US) was asking our opinions on AI. Here’s my response:

There is a vast difference between pattern-recognition models that do things like help identify tumors and LLMs that are built from the theft by scrapping of thousands of books without giving payments to the authors -- stealing their livelihood. LLMs are notorious for hallucinating facts and references. LLM usage is dangerous because nursing is built on scientific facts, not machines' hallucinations. Patients deserve the strictest safeguards, so their health isn't harmed by a machine's error. Our profession's reputation could be at risk from blind enthusiasm for tech's latest shiny toy. Also, the data centers required for AI are heavy users of electricity and water resources. They tend to be placed in poor areas and cause environmental pollution while raising electrical rates for our most disadvantaged patients.

I know the feeling. We took care of these two hooligans for my son while he was on a trip. They’re ~1.5 years younger than our cat and still kittenish. Watame, on the left, loved to use me as a trampoline for zoomies in the middle of the night. I didn’t get much sleep.

Haruo Nakajima in the rubber suit in Ishiro Honda’s Gojira was infinitely better. From IMDB:

The Godzilla suit used for the film was so hot inside that suit actor Haruo Nakajima would frequently faint. According to Nakajima, temperatures inside the suit reached up to 60 degrees Celsius (or 140 degrees Fahrenheit) due to the hot studio lights and it was not uncommon for one cup of Nakajima's sweat to be drained from the suit. Special effects director Teruyoshi Nakano, who worked with Nakajima in the later Godzilla films, described his admiration for the actor, stating "Inside the Godzilla suit, it was very dark, lonely, and isolated. Usually the person who wears the suit becomes nervous and anxious. During summertime it's very hot, it can become hell in there. But Mr. Nakajima always persevered. He acted in the suit underwater, he was buried underground, he withstood pyrotechnic explosions...and through it all he was always Godzilla."
