London Climate Action Week is almost here, & Commission members will be part of the conversation. Together with partners, we'll explore how systems approaches can connect challenges to create greater impact. We'll also discuss what a safe & just world could look like.
Can we achieve high prosperity and equality for all while staying within planetary boundaries? The World Inequality Lab's new Global Justice Report says yes — but only if 3 things are met together: 1️⃣ Fast decarbonization 2️⃣ Shift from overconsumption to "sufficiency" 3️⃣ Swift reduction in inequality
The week also reinforced the value of meeting face to face: deeper debate, clearer thinking, and stronger scientific collaboration. 🤝
The discussions brought us closer to completing our next assessment of global boundaries & deepened understanding of the societal changes needed to reduce risk, improve wellbeing, & stay within planetary limits.
Last week, members of the Earth Commission gathered in person at @tsinghuauniversity.bsky.social in Beijing 🌐 Commissioners and contributors advanced work on updating the Safe and Just Earth System Boundaries, tackled complex research questions, and refined priorities for the months ahead.
A new UN report, “Counting What Counts”, rethinks progress beyond GDP. It proposes indicators for well-being, fairness & a healthy planet. The Commission contributed via Safe and Just world framing and now an intergovernmental process is now underway with civil society. 🔗 www.un.org/en/beyondGDP
How do we measure what truly matters? 🌍 A new report from a UN “Beyond GDP” expert workshop explores how we can rethink progress beyond economic growth to include wellbeing, sustainability, and inequality.
The Commission's work focuses on defining the safe and just space for humanity, and science-based pathways to get there. As countries take more tangible steps toward phasing out fossil fuels, robust scientific guidance will be essential to ensure transitions are credible, effective, and equitable.

On Earth Day, a simple truth: a healthy planet and a just world are inseparable. The science is clear. Protecting people means protecting the planet. And safeguarding the planet means addressing injustice. Learn more at earthcommission.org/safe-and-jus...
Commissioners Joyeeta Gupta & Juan Camilo Cardenas join 200+ experts urging Colombia's president to rethink investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). ISDS lets corporations challenge gov decisions w/major financial consequences. This creates friction as countries move to phase out fossil fuels.
The Beyond GDP agenda isn’t just about new indicators. 📏 It’s about shaping the choices that determine whether economies truly support people and the planet—or fall short. Science plays a vital role in keeping this process credible and evidence-based.
At a recent workshop in Geneva, Earth Commissioner David Obura and contributor Raimon Cardelús Ylla-Català joined experts exploring the UN’s Beyond GDP agenda. 🌍 Researchers, civil society, and policy experts came together to discuss turning ambition into action.
In Alaska, glacial retreat is reshaping landscapes, ecosystems, & daily life. ❄️🏔️ A recent webinar from us, @futureearth.bsky.social, AIMES, & @wcrpclimate.bsky.social brought together scientists & community voices to explore what these changes mean. 🎥 Watch it here youtu.be/h8iEjH0X2Bo?...
🌍 “Working on climate and nature is the way forward.” 🌅 Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, shares a powerful reminder of why transforming our systems benefits everyone.

As glaciers retreat and ice sheets destabilize, the Earth’s cryosphere is undergoing rapid, unprecedented change. 🌍❄️ On March 19, Earth Commission member Bo Su will present research on a safe operating space for the cryosphere at “Cryosphere in Crisis" at #UNESCO headquarters.
Our planet sets the rules. Clean air, water, healthy oceans, and thriving nature aren’t optional. They’re the limits we all live within. Researchers with the Earth Commission maps those limits and explores how humanity can thrive without breaking them. Learn more: earthcommission.org
AI is reshaping our lives & planet. Without rules, it can deepen inequality, fuel polarisation, harm the environment. A new analysis in The Lancet Planetary Health, co-authored by Commission Co-Chair Fatima Denton, calls for AI as a shared global good 🌍🤖 🔗: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
⚠️ Tipping points are often framed as looming risks. 🌱 But positive tipping points show how targeted action can rapidly shift systems toward safe and just futures. 🎥 In this video, Commissioner Tim Lenton explains why tipping points aren’t just something to fear — but something we can activate.
A new report from @esabcc.bsky.social says Europe must prepare and adapt to a warmer future under current policies. It warns of dramatic human, economic costs. To prevent that, we must cut emissions, restore nature, transform societies. But there’s another layer to highlight: justice ⚖️
With diverse expertise, they explored transformations across sectors & examined case studies to see how local solutions can inform global change. For an international team, in-person meetings like this are invaluable. They give honest dialogue, stronger connections & a shared sense of direction.
What does a just world on a safe planet look like? 🌍 And how can we get there without leaving anyone behind? 🤝 This week, the Commission’s Transformations Pathway group met in Stockholm to map the systemic changes societies need for a sustainable and fair future. ♻️
