🏅 We also heard from this year's Le Cren Medallist, Adalberto Luis Val, awarded for lifelong contributions to conservation, training, or public understanding of fish biology. Adalberto took us on his research journey through the Amazon, in his truly charismatic style! #FSBI2026

Fuelled up from lunch and ready to go! Opening the "Fish & Human Health" session we have our next keynote, Ioanna Katsiadaki! Ioanna talks about the importance of fish as a healthy food. However, heavy metal contamination like mercury, POPs and other emerging contaminants threaten this #FSBI2026

Starting today's talks is Bryce Stewart. Dramatic changes in sea temperatures due to climate change are causing radical ecosystem shifts. We finish the day with a talk from #FSBI2026 FSBI medal winner, Irmak Kurtul. Irmak shows some career highlights, how she came to work in the UK and potential research opportunities in Türkiye. Sarah Birchenough talks about managing species while balancing economic, social and environmental priorities in areas where marine conservation zones and urbanised environments intersect. 1st talk of #FSBI2026 is from Jack Jones awardee, Rashid Sumaila, who pays tribute to Jack Jones while also professing to be the "silo smashing guy"! Rashid's talk "MPAs as economic correctives" explores ocean governance beyond western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic economics.

Now, esteemed guest Gary Whelan, President of the @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social, who the FSBI have a long standing relationship with. Gary talks about the weight of stories & images in influencing policy, the importance of making evidence policy ready & not being afraid of being an acknowledged expert

We've had a great first day of #FSBI2026 here in sunny Southampton! The morning started with an excursion on the RV Callista, a visit to the fish-holding facility at Sparshot and a walk along the River Itchen. The afternoon was then packed with professional development and special issue workshops.

In November 2025, using funds from the FSBI sponsorship grant, Dr Garfield Kwan hosted a research symposium following an 11 month multi-stressor experiment. The event allowed experts to be brought together, generating an integrated organismal biology dataset to assess impacts of future change
