This scarlet tiger #moth is around at the moment. And what a beautiful bimbo he is 🤩 There has been a real increase of flying insects in our garden this year, likely due to ~5 years of leaving lots of wilderness, plus good conditions. Party time for bats, swifts & swallows!

OK, here's why I was doing all this... This next one is a real #meta-analysis, in which I've colour-coded study quality (redder: worse, bluer: better). Quality is points-based, between -3 and +3 (e.g., no blinding: -1, double-blind: +1; placebo control: +1; counterbalanced: +1, etc) Any good..? 🙏
Completing my evening's work: now with user-defined colours, symbols, AND linestyles per study. I think we can all agree this is the most beautiful and accessible Forest Plot that's ever been created. The figure legend stretches to three pages.
An evening with Matlab well spent: made a function to create forest plots for #meta-analysis. no vibe, just coding. This function is the definitive answer to the question: "Why can't I specify random colours for my studies, eh?"

You are right! Following J&B's description to the letter - I can now reproduce their graphs. I did both their simple (a/b) & compound (a/b)/(c/d) ratios, & repeated it with correlated data (r~0.7) - more sensible for all neuro/bio fields that I know of. Correlated CIs are narrower. many thanks!
Their figure looks nice & lawful, and their conclusion was very strong: DON'T USE RATIOS, as they require "substantial magnitudes" or "unrealistic precision" or "prohibitively large sample sizes" eg, with N=20, SD=50%, mean ratios<0.7 will be significant BUT: I could not reproduce their results 👇
J&B simulated 2 (or 4) sets of normal, independent random numbers: a, b (c, d). A simple ratio was calculated: a/b, then the mean ratios across different sample sizes were calculated. The aim was to construct null distributions for testing ratios against 1. Great. Their Figure 1 plots the 95% CIs:

So far, I have found six papers that use the "95% CI" method to offer advice on how many trials are needed. The graph below plots the R trials per subject, & the recommended, r, trials to reach the 95% CI. The correlation is strong 💪 and the slope is 0.41...
Summarising across 5 repeat sizes and 5 sample sizes: The number of repeats, r, required to be within the 95% CI of the full set of trials, R, is linearly dependent on R. The slope is about 0.4. There will be a nice mathematical formula for this, and it will be in Amman et al (2020):
And, just for fun, an unusually-large study with 128 trials per partcipant. Doing this study, you would conclude that ~40 to 80 trials are needed 😱
And here's a more typical experiment, with 32 trials per subject. Now you need 10-15 trials to get within the original 95%CI!
