In the summer movie blockbuster swing of things based on books I read in grade school.
America 250 time capsule? Today’s Miami Herald print edition main section captures this historic July 4th Independence Day. It’s all online, too, natch. But for today, a keepsake.
South Florida parents and high school grads, see you Tuesday night from the stage of the James L. Knight Center for the 2026 Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards. Honored, as always, to serve as a presenter and a judge. It will live stream on Herald platforms that evening.
Drumroll…! Here are the Young Talent Big Dreams winners for 2026. Presented by Actors’ Playhouse and The Children’s Trust for 16 years. I’ve been judging since its inception and already can’t wait til next year!
Willie Nelson + Bob Dylan + “I can’t read your mind ... the letters are too small” = something I gotta hear! Willie's new album, his 79th solo studio effort and 156th overall, includes a new, rare Nelson-Dylan cowrite with that lyrical quip. "Dream Chaser" is out May 29. 😀
Watching ‘Naked Ambition,' my pal Dennis Scholl’s affectionate documentary about trailblazing pin-up photographer Bunny Yeager stirred many personal and professional memories of growning up on Miami Beach and later writing stories about, and set on, the faces and places of the Beach for Miami Herald
Opening Night for “Dear Evan Hansen” at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, Coral Gables, Feb. 13, 2026.
As South Florida faces the longest stretch of cold weather since 2010, we asked our Hurricane Aquatics swim coach for tips on swimming 🏊 in cold weather. Tuesday night practice air temperature was in the 50s with a “feels-like” of 49 at UM in Coral Gables. Here’s what Coach Andrew suggests.
This Hurricanes swim parka is so old it’s standing on its own. Zero flexibility. Full rigor mortis. Question: if I put it on during this week’s “cold front,” will it shatter… or simply outlive me?
Any time “Wicked: For Good” threatens to land the powerful Cynthia Erivo sends the movie soaring. She’s that good. I loved it.
The air was 60°, the water was warm, and my heart? Freshly rewired. Two weeks after ablation surgery, I figured a 200 fly was the perfect test. Coach says even he wouldn’t do it — and he’s 20. 😅 That’s why they call me Mr. Fly.
Finally back in team colors — two years later and still flying 🦋with the Canes. 🧡💚 Hurricane Aquatics, Inc.
My opening weekend ranking of all 12 songs on Taylor Swift’s “The Life of a Showgirl” album. Positions 1 and 2 are a dead heat. The giddy sing-a-long infectious spritz of “Opalite” wins the weekend. But the dopamine “Reputation” rush of “CANCELLED!” is the likely long-term obsession.
Weekend around UMiami: Catching up with Miami Herald friends for a Sunday movie at the Cosford Cinema, a campus tour and refueling at Centennial Village. Saturday night caught “Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning” on its big screen.
What’s waiting at the end of the lane? Stick around. 👀 #UMiami Hurricane Aquatics
From the pool to the gridiron — this shirt has seen 40+ years of Hurricanes pride! 🟢🟠 The U has always been home. GameDay vibes are here! 🙌 #GoCanes #GameDay #ItsAllAboutTheU #MiamiHurricanes
A new Girl Scout cookie is coming. Watch the flavor reveal and first taste test. www.miamiherald.com/news/local/c...
I was a drowned rat after swim practice at the U on Friday afternoon, and it had nothing to do with what Coach had us do in the pool. When will all this rain end? What South Florida can expect on the weekend and beyond. Read more at: www.miamiherald.com/news/weather...
A Taylor Swift-University of Miami T12 The Life of a Showgirl tie-in? This professor and pop music critic can play with Easter eggs, too!
HBO’s The Gilded Age Season 3 finale. Rich in every regard. Can’t think of too many streaming series that grow in such measures in a third season. Simply marvelous.
Got some details on when the Kendall Village Barnes & Noble store is closing and some photos of where the new replacement store is opening. It's not far. www.miamiherald.com/news/local/c...
Hurricane Aquatics swim practice in the summer of Jaws 50. Gonna need a bigger kickboard.
Enjoyed “The Survivors,” a gripping Australian six-episode miniseries drama based on Jane Harper’s 2020 novel on Netflix.
How Carly Simon’s controversial album cover for “Playing Possum” 50 years ago in 1975 paved the way to Sabrina Carpenter’s coming “Man’s Best Friend” in 2025.
Went to Liz Flynt’s book signing for “Hustler: 50 Years of Freedom” at Coral Gables’ Books & Books. Flynt is the widow of Larry Flynt and chairwoman of Hustler. Lea Black moderated. I remember studying Larry Flynt’s landmark case when I was at FIU grad school, Mass Media Law class, years ago.
I got to spend some time chatting with singer Connie Francis at her lovely South Florida home Friday. She introduced us to her Pretty Little Baby Lexi!
