An earlier iteration of the Nashville Metro fantasy system I posted on the blog I wanna say last year. Instead of the four lines with branches shown on the blog, this system, shown as of 1991, is a single line running from Public Square down to Brentwood and Cool Springs.

The diagram is in the general style of the Helsinki Metro 1983 map, with the single line depicted as a series of horizontal green popsicle sticks laid one after the other, with stations in the gaps and connecting streetcar/interurban/suburban rail lines listed below each gap, set slightly to the right.

Revisiting an oldie today.

Fantasy map of local rail services in San Jose, California.

Red: Peninsular Railway interurban (mostly intact + extensions down Santa Clara to Alum Rock and up El Camino Real to Palo Alto) plus VTA Light Rail (including Orange Line extension to Eastridge and an intact Almaden Shuttle)

Yellow: San Jose Railroads (routes decommissioned where they duplicate Peninsular Railway/VTA services, and extended elsewhere where the current extent of the city's sprawl allows for it)

So while in London I randomly pointed my camera blind over a high wall well above eye level just to see what was on the other side and well uh I knew there was a sub-surface tube line back there but I certainly wasn't expecting this.

Multiple layers of railway lines meeting in a fairly complicated junction in an enormous open cut in central London near Farringdon Station. I want to say the upper level is sub-surface tube and the lower level is Thameslink.

The Shakespeare boards at the original site of the Globe have been defaced by an Oxfordian.

A board discussing the life of William Shakespeare, on which his birth and death years have been crossed out and replaced by the birth and death years of the Earl of Oxford, and in addition the word “suggests” has been underscored to imply certain persons are making unreasonable conclusions. This angers me greatly.

I once again find myself wondering why we can’t have nice things.

A giant advert screen that functions in part as a departure board for the bus terminal in the town centre, but this specific board is some distance from the terminal itself and there are several spread throughout the area.

The New Adlestrop railway atlas of Great Britain, stripped down to the coast outline, over which is a series of hand-drawn fantasy suburban rail networks for London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, and now Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee.

Finally figured this one out. It had been driving me nuts for a long time.

From Wikimedia Commons, a hypothetical master plan for the Helsinki Metro dating from the 60s, wildly more extensive and ambitious than what was actually built, with some service patterns (east-west orange, north-south green, and loop purple) crudely sketched on top.

The 1960s plan was as I understand it was supposed to be specced more like a stadtbahn or proto-light-metro than the heavy rail metro that was actually built, so if I ever crayon this thing I won’t follow this plan exactly.

A commenter on the blog asked about a fantasy Red/Yellow Car map of Los Angeles complementing the fantasy Metro map. I don't have one of those and currently have no plans to draw one, but I do have this reference diagram.

I lost the ability to form complete sentences when I saw this.

A hypothetical Washington Metro map dating from about the mid-60s, showing a trunk line through Downtown DC with branches to Van Ness, Pentagon City, Woodside, Kenilworth, and an unnamed location close to Columbia Heights. The diagram is in angular black and white, with the Metro getting thick lines and what looks like arterial feeder routes (which may or may not be transit) in a thinner weight. It is very brutalist-midcentury-modern and very, *very* sexy.
